Beacon Inc. could not provide its comprehensive services without the support of volunteers. We are very grateful for your interest in our organization, and we have many different volunteer opportunities. Our biggest need right now is for kitchen assistant volunteers and hospitality desk attendants.. Generally, we ask that volunteers commit to a weekly two-hour shift for a minimum of three months, but we are happy to discuss other options if that doesn't meet your needs, as we are trying to meet short term needs as well.
- Kitchen Volunteers work in Phil’s Kitchen in two hour shifts between 7:30 am and 2:00 pm. Duties include helping our cook with meal preparation, serving, managing the coffee station, and clean up.
- Hospitality Volunteers work at Shalom Center in two-hour shifts between 8 am and 4 pm. Duties include managing guests’ mail, signing up guests for services, distributing supplies, assisting with long-term storage and day storage, and fielding a variety of phone calls and in-person inquiries.
Location & Parking:
Orientations are conducted at Shalom Center, located at 620 S. Walnut which is a half-block south of 1st Street. It is a two-story, blue building on the left, and in the front there is a gazebo containing a big, mirrored heart. The small parking lot in the rear of the building is full during business hours on weekdays. You can park on Wylie or 1st Street - any of the side streets on the east side of Walnut. Your entrance is on the south side of the building. A center staff member is usually posted at that entrance and they will direct you to me (if I am not already down there, which I usually am). We require that volunteers continue to wear a mask at this time.
Thank you for your interest in serving those community members who are most vulnerable, and I look forward to hearing from you!
