Join our volunteer team and make a real impact this tax season!
The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way South Central Indiana, provides free federal and state tax preparation to low- and moderate-income residents across south central Indiana (Brown, Monroe, and Owen Counties). Last year, 78 volunteers helped file 851 returns, saving residents over $212,750 in tax preparation fees and bringing back more than $1,047,364 in refunds and credits!
Volunteer Roles:
• Greeter: Welcomes clients, assists with the intake process and administrative tasks
• Bilingual Interpreter: Assists with communication between a tax preparer and client
• Intake Specialists*: Assists with the drop-off of tax documents and/or the virtual tax process
• Tax Preparers*: Prepares accurate tax returns
• Quality Reviewers*: Reviews completed tax returns
• Assistant Site Coordinator*: Oversees the tax site
(*IRS certification required — training and certification are completely FREE!)
No prior experience needed! One of the best perks of volunteering is getting certified to file taxes — for free! You’ll gain valuable skills, professional experience, and make a lasting impact on your community.
Time Commitment: 1 shift (3–4 hrs) per week, late January–early April. Flexible scheduling available.
