Event Description: The Bloomington Youth Basketball (BYB) League focuses on basketball fundamentals and the application of learned skills during game participation for players in grades K-6.
All leagues are coed through grade 3; girls play in a girls-only league beginning in grade 4.
Season includes weekly practices and games on one night a week. Teams practice two nights a week for the first two weeks of the season, then one night a week for the remainder of the season. Practice times and days are determined by the volunteer coach. Times can vary between 5:30-9:30 p.m. based on the coach's schedule.
Parent/player requests for placement on specific teams are not accepted. All requests must be submitted by volunteer coaches.
Season runs October 14–December 19. Practices begin the week of October 14. Games begin the week of October 28. Games and practices are not held the week of November 25.
Duties: We are looking for coaches who can commit to once-or-twice weekly practices and one game per week or weekend. Time and day of practices are determined by grade level. Volunteer coaches will enjoy making a difference in the lives of kids and can help develop our next big IU basketball star (we suggest two coaches per team).
Timeline: Prospective coaches sign up by Wednesday, September 25. Selected coaches must attend a mandatory Coaches Meeting and Coach Draft on Wednesday, October 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center. All selected coaches must complete an annual online coaching certification course from the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA). The certification fee for each coach is $20. The online training is available at nays.org. Contact Scott Pedersen at 349-3774 or pederses@bloomington.in.gov with any questions.
Program Time: Coaches plan and lead one or two one-hour practices per week and one, one-hour game per week. Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up
Other: Returning coaches and parents have first priority for placement. Volunteers should commit for the entire season. All coaches are required to undergo a background check
