Monroe County Auxiliary Police

The Monroe County Auxiliary Police is a law enforcement agency comprised completely of part-time volunteers who come from throughout Monroe County. Our mission is to supplement the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) by filling in for full-time deputies when there are staff shortages, providing security at local events, and performing special assignments.

Our reserve deputies work side by side with full-time deputies. The Sheriff’s Reserve is a not-for-profit organization which raises its own money for training and equipment. We save the county money by working hours that would normally have to be worked by a full-time deputy using overtime pay. We are committed to making Monroe County a safer community!

The Monroe County Sheriff Reserve began in 1957 and became a non-profit organization in 1965 becoming the Monroe County Auxiliary Police. Today, the reserves are an integral part of the sheriff’s department supporting full-time deputies during shifts or at events. The reserve unit holds a hiring event each year looking for those who wish to give back to their community or for those who are looking for a future in law enforcement. Many of the full-time deputies in the department today came from the ranks of the reserve unit.

To volunteer a reserve candidate must pass a full-background check, go through an interview battery, and take a 40-hour pre-basic course. Once sworn in after successfully passing the pre-basic course reserves will enter our reserve academy and begin field training with a training officer.

We ask a lot from our volunteers, typically we only see one or two new candidates finish all the training. The reserve unit takes great pride in being very self-sufficient. While there are some areas where the sheriff’s department provides the unit support for the most part the reserve unit pays for itself, for example we purchase items such as vehicles, headquarters building, utilities, uniforms, law enforcement equipment and training.

Income is primarily derived from providing security, traffic control, and crowd control for both private and public events.
