About Us

Bethel AME Church is an African Methodist Episcopal church in Bloomington, Indiana. A member of the church, Malaika Baxa, began the Homework Help Program in 2011 as a way to help church youth with school work on Wednesday nights while their parents attended Bible Study. Homework Help continues to serve church youth and has expanded to provide tutoring for any K-12 students seeking academic support. We continue to meet at the same time that coincides with Bible Study, 6-8 PM EST every Wednesday night. Many of our volunteers tend to be students enrolled in graduate programs at Indiana University Bloomington, undergraduate teacher candidates in the School of Education, and some of our volunteer tutors are full-time faculty and staff at IU.

What We Do

Bethel is a church seeking to save the lost and giving hope to a transitional multicultural community. Letting all people know Jesus Christ is the answer for the world today.

Our signature program, the Homework Help, connects volunteer tutors with K-12 students in need of help with their homework after school. The program is completely free and open to the public.
