This workshop will share some of the latest business trends with examples of how they are being adopted by nonprofits to achieve success. These include trends in:
- Developing Nonprofit Strategic, Operational, and Business Plans
- Implementing Understandable Financial Structures and Techniques
- Determining Effective Marketing Scenarios and Priorities
- Making Human Resource Decisions
Attendees will discover specific techniques being used to advance nonprofits, including:
- Determining when is the "right" time to undertake a Strategic Plan and which kind of planning is most appropriate for your Nonprofit
- Applying lessons from Social Entrepreneurs that can help expand your revenue sources beyond fundraising and grants
- Using the latest branding and marketing techniques to best identify and appeal to specific clients and supporters
- Integrating your volunteers and staff for greater productivity
Most importantly, participants will learn how SCORE volunteers can help your individual nonprofit with your specific challenges!

SCORE volunteers are real-world professionals with time-tested knowledge who donate thousands of hours to help small businesses succeed - both for-profit and nonprofit businesses. Several counselors are experts in such areas as accounting, finance, marketing, management, and strategic plan preparation - and how these best apply to the specific challenges faced by nonprofits.
Presenter Al Lyons, PhD, is a Lecturer at Indiana University, Bloomington, teaching courses in Nonprofit Management for the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Dr. Lyons has extensive experience teaching, writing and consulting on a wide variety of topics related to nonprofit management. For five years he has led the successful Nonprofit Board Certificate Seminar offered twice a year by the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network.
Bloomington SCORE is an affiliate of the national nonprofit association. SCORE is dedicated to helping small business and nonprofit entrepreneurs get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration, and has been mentoring small business owners for more than forty years.
