BloomingOUT, WFHB’s weekly live public affairs program devoted to covering LGBTQ+ issues in Bloomington and beyond, is seeking a volunteer news reporter to research, write and produce stories relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. The reporter will contribute timely news pieces to the program, including local, state, national and international updates.

In this role, you will conduct interviews, gather information from multiple sources, and prepare stories for both on-air and web publication. Training will be provided and all levels of experience are welcome.

Responsibilities:

Research and write LGBTQ+-focused news stories for BloomingOUT.

Conduct interviews, on the phone or in person (or in Zoom), and select soundbites for air.

Package stories, which includes recording voice-over and editing together pieces.

Collaborate with the BloomingOUT team to ensure stories align with the program’s mission.

Monitor current events and emerging issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Skills:
You will learn how to edit audio, record interviews, and write for radio and web publication. You will also gain experience in Wordpress, SEO and LGBTQ+-focused journalism.

BloomingOUT, WFHB’s weekly live public affairs program dedicated to covering LGBTQ+ issues in Bloomington and beyond, is seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded host to join our volunteer team. The host will be responsible for leading engaging and thought-provoking conversations on-air, introducing segments, and interviewing guests. This position requires a passion for LGBTQ+ issues, a commitment to inclusive and ethical journalism and the ability to create a welcoming space for listeners and guests alike.

Training will be provided and all levels of experience are welcome.

Responsibilities:

Host BloomingOUT live on-air, introducing topics, segments, and guests.

Conduct live and pre-recorded interviews, asking thoughtful and informed questions.

Collaborate with the BloomingOUT production team to plan each week’s program.

Engage with the local LGBTQ+ community to develop show topics and book guests.

Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and professional tone on-air.

Assist with show promotion via WFHB’s website and social media when needed.

Skills:
You will learn how to host a live radio show, conduct broadcast-quality interviews, and produce compelling on-air content. You will also gain skills in audio production, Wordpress and community engagement.

Prison Affairs Reporter:

WFHB’s Kite Line program is seeking volunteers to write weekly headlines for the show. Kite Line covers issues related to incarceration, often by amplifying the voices of people directly impacted by the prison system. The program is known for its interviews with people inside prisons and for highlighting poor conditions, resistance and the broader effects of mass incarceration.

Headline reporters will write brief introductions to each week’s program, help summarize content, and craft headlines that reflect the urgency and complexity of prison justice issues. Topics may range from local developments in Bloomington or Indiana to national and international prison-related news. This position is ideal for someone with strong writing skills, an interest in abolitionist perspectives, and a critical view of the prison industrial complex.

Responsibilities:

Write concise headlines and introductory summaries for weekly Kite Line episode.

Collaborate with the Kite Line team to identify the core focus of each show

Stay informed on prison-related news and movements, both locally and globally

Assist with web content and social media promotion when needed

Skills:

You will strengthen your writing for radio and web, and gain a deeper understanding of editorial decision-making in social justice media. You may also learn skills like Wordpress, headline writing, SEO, and the principles of abolitionist journalism.

Training will be provided. All levels of experience are welcome.

Audio Engineer:
WFHB Community Radio’s news department is searching for a reliable, detail-oriented audio engineer to join our growing team. The audio engineer’s responsibilities include creating and editing recordings, setting up equipment in the studio and at events, and meeting project deadlines. You should have excellent time management and show up on schedule for pre-recorded or live interviews for the news and public affairs department.

To be successful as an audio engineer, you should have a discerning ear and be able to identify what sounds good. Training will be provided and experience of all kinds are welcome.

Responsibilities:
Editing, mixing, and manipulating recorded and live sound.
Setting up equipment safely and on time.
Testing and troubleshooting equipment regularly, and replacing any faulty components.
Fixing and enhancing sound during live broadcast.
Participating in training opportunities and constantly finding new ways to improve skills.

Requirements:
Practical experience with sound equipment.
Superb ear for sound.
Ability to work under pressure and stay calm when things go wrong.

WFHB Community Radio’s Youth Radio department is looking for people ages 13-20 to help cover local news. In this role, you’ll get hands-on experience by investigating topics that interest you, from local government to human interest stories. You’ll learn skills like researching, conducting interviews, and editing audio. No experience is needed - just bring your curiosity, and we’ll provide the training to help you succeed!

WFHB Community Radio is looking for DJs (ages 13-20) to host one-hour shows on Saturdays between 4 and 8 pm during Youth Radio. If you're passionate about music, this is your chance to share your favorite tracks with the community! You’ll get hands-on experience hosting a radio show, curating playlists, and operating broadcast and recording equipment. We welcome all music tastes and no experience is required as we provide all the training you need!

Package stories, which includes recording voice-over and editing together pieces.
Record interviews to be aired as “back and forth” pieces.
Some reporters may be assigned beats.
Encouraged to take photographs for their stories.

In partnership with Community Access Television Services, the reporter will contribute to a script summarizing the weekly meetings, and assist our organization in delivering important government-related content to the public. In this role, you will perform first-hand information gathering through on-site and in-studio investigations, reports, interviews, and Q&As.

To ensure success as a reporter, you should be interested in current events, research, adhering to ethical principles, and maintaining professionalism at all times. Training will be provided and experience of all kinds are welcome.

Responsibilities:

Watch government meetings and discern what is the “story”
Summarize what the public needs to know
Cover a variety of meetings from the Board of Public Works to Bloomington City Council
Conduct interviews, on the phone or in person (or in Zoom), and select sound bites for air.
Help produce a weekly program, CATS Week, which occurs each Friday.
Package stories, which includes recording voice-over and editing together pieces.
Record interviews to be aired as “back and forth” pieces.

As an environmental reporter, you will research and write environmental features to be broadcast on the airwaves. Upholding ethical principles, knowledge of current events and a passion for environmental issues will be crucial in your success. Training will be provided and experience of all kinds are welcome.

Environmental package stories, which includes recording voice-over and editing together pieces.

WFHB Community Radio's news department is looking for an enthusiastic news anchor to join our team and participate in the creative cycle of daily news broadcasts.

As a news anchor, you should be able to follow current events and present news stories to audiences in an informative, interesting and unbiased way.

Responsibilities
Research local community, state, national and international current events
Meet with the news director, reporters and other news anchors to be briefed on the day’s news
Collaborate with the news director to choose stories to broadcast considering audience preferences
Revise scripts and prepare to deliver them on-air
Comply with the moral code of the journalistic profession

Requirements and skills
Understanding of the newscast process
Broad knowledge of local, national and international affairs (e.g. political, legislative and cultural)
Excellent verbal skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Available to work on a flexible schedule
Ability to work under stressful conditions and strict deadlines

The WFHB Community Calendar is a vital resource that informs our community about events happening in the WFHB listening area. Concerts, author talks, artists openings, club meetings, and more are added to our online Community Calendar by dedicated volunteers who wish to see South-Central Indiana maintain a vibrant arts and culture scene. Calendar events are then read, on-air, by our programmers. Calendar crew members dedicate at least 2 hours per week to updating our website by managing a email inbox (calendars@wfhb.org), as well as seeking out events in town using a variety of tools and resources.
