Volunteer: Area 10 Caring Companions - Choose How You Want to Help!

Become a Caring Companion with Area 10 Agency on Aging and help older adults and individuals with disabilities remain independent, safe, and socially connected.

As a volunteer, you’ll be matched with someone based on the types of support you’re comfortable providing. You can choose from a variety of helpful tasks, including:

Friendly visiting – brighten someone’s day with conversation and companionship  Help around the home – assist with light cleaning or organizing  Yard/garden help – light outdoor tasks (not lawn-mowing)  Miscellaneous tasks – such as pet care, limited mobility assistance, or other needs based on your interests and the neighbor’s situation

This is a great opportunity for students to build social service skills, families to volunteer together, or anyone who wants to brighten someone’s day.  Area 10 serves all of Monroe and Owen counties, and volunteers can choose where to help based on what’s convenient to where they live, work, or spend time.

Commitment:  Just one hour per week, with a minimum commitment of six months (or one semester for students).

Families welcome! Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Requirements:  Volunteers must attend an orientation, complete an application, and agree to a limited criminal history check.

Volunteer: Help Refresh Food Collection Barrels for Area 10!

The Area 10 Agency on Aging Mobile Food Pantry uses decorated barrels to collect food donations — and after more than a decade of service, they’re in need of a refresh. Some are painted, others are covered in collage art, and many are showing signs of wear.

Here’s what we need help with:

Stripping off old collage materials (magazine clippings, adhesives, etc.) Repainting barrels that are faded or chipped Reimagining and redecorating with fresh pictures or paint We have around 30 barrels, so this is more than a one-day project, OR a shared effort. If your group can’t take on all 30 barrels, that’s okay — we can divide them up. Every bit helps!

Please note: Volunteers will need to provide their own arts and crafts materials, such as paint, brushes, adhesives, and collage supplies.

Need help with logistics? We can assist with dropping off and picking up barrels to make it easier for your group to participate. Let us know how many barrels your group would like to work on.

Whether you're a community organization, school club, scout troop, or just a group of friends who love a good DIY challenge, we’d love your help.

Interested?

Please contact Suzanne Donnelly at 812-935-2553 or sdonnelly@area10agency.org, or Amy Wardlow at 812-935-2523 or awardlow@area10agency.org.

The Area 10 Agency on Aging Mobile Food Pantry provides monthly supplemental groceries to homebound, income-eligible individuals, helping them maintain independence through better access to food and nutritional education.
