Volunteer: Spiritual Companion

Spiritual Companion Do you regularly attend a faith community?

(Church, Temple, Synagogue, Mosque, etc)

Are you interested in making a new friend? Are you interested in helping someone have access to their faith community?  You will be matched up with an individual who attends or wants to attend the same congregation. We will also consider the needs of the individual and the gifts, talents, and abilities you bring.  Whether you attend on a weekday or weekend - we welcome you and your support. Supports may include (but not limited to):

- transportation to and from worship, congregational activities/events, etc.

- a friend to sit with

- Someone to talk to before, during, or after

- Maybe a friend to just hang out with occasionally

- Some may need more physical support and assistance

The goal is: to provide access and create meaningful relationships - thus moving past inclusion and toward BELONGING

Far majority of people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities do have a faith tradition that is important to them. However,  many do not attend regularly. The two biggest reasons for this are: they don't feel welcome, and they don't have access (transportation). This leads to exclusion; exclusion from their faith, exclusion from meaningful relationships, and more.

This opportunity will not only enrich the life of your Spiritual Companion but also enrich YOUR life.

Volunteer: Skateboard Volunteer

Bloomington Skateboarders!  We need you!

We are seeking volunteers for the 26-27 School Year!

In the Club Skateboard Program, program members in the Club learn all about skateboarding and the basics of safety, equipment, and skills needed to skateboard!

Volunteers support the staff leading the program. Volunteers can contribute knowledge and help members who need a little extra support or a helping hand.

A great volunteer will have basic skateboard or longboard experience. This is a skateboard basics program. You do not have to know any tricks at all.

Skill taught in this program are; Stance, Pushing, Stopping, Carving, Turning, Falling, Drop Down, etc. If you can ride a board on flat ground you have all the skill you need to be an expert in this program! The love of helping others learn to skate is the key to a great experience.

Many youth have an interest in skateboarding but do not have anywhere to learn with help. Often youth try it once without help, fall, then believe they are not capable. This program provides them the step by step instruction that enables them to be successful in learning and falling in love with skating! Skateboarding helps teach youth determination, focus, confidence and that falling is not failing and how to get back up and try again.

You do not need to bring anything. Since this takes place in our gym we only use our gym safe skateboards. We have all the helmets, pads, skateboards, and skate tools the members will use in the program.

You can sign up to come weekly for the program or can choose to come as a guest for a single session first to see what it is all about prior to committing to the full semester. If you come more than once you will go through out volunteer onboarding that includes and application, background check, reference check and online 45 minute safety training.

This program will run for 10 weeks in January - April

We are looking for volunteers for Ferguson Crestmont Club (1111 W 12th St) and Lincoln Street (311 S Lincoln St)

Volunteer: Circle Mentoring

We are looking for mentors for the 26-27 School Year!

Circle Mentoring is a unique style of Mentoring and is especially appropriate for developing adolescents. A group of mentors provide a broad example of healthy human interaction that allows youth to develop inner resources based on a menu or palette of positive human behaviors. The group’s primary purpose is to create a safe space to develop the competency and character needed to explore and achieve important life goals. Circle mentoring is support. It is not treatment, advice giving, or “fixing.”

Volunteers are paired with a Lead Mentor, and will help to facilitate the circle. They will listen to the teens and affirm the gifts they see. They will give 2 hours a week to attending the circle at a school per week.

This opportunity takes place during the school day in our local High Schools.

A successful person is someone who cares about youth, wants to support youth through listening to them and affirming their abilities.

By showing up as a Circle Mentor, they are empowering youth to reach their full potential!

There are semi regular circle mentor meetings where we learn from each other about what is working/not working, and check-in. Training is required. You will not be in charge of youth or left alone with them.

This opportunity takes place during the school day in our local high schools.  Check with Monique about the specific schedule if you are interested.

If you are interested please contact Monique at mphilpot@bgcbloomington.org

You will have a discussion with our Circle Mentor Lead to determine the fit of this opportunity and if it is a match you will then be provided with the steps to get started.

Volunteer: Child Visit Monitors Needed - Help Monitor CASA's Waitlist

Monroe County CASA needs Child Visit Monitors, a position created in 2018 to help observe the situation of children on CASA’s waitlist. A Child Visit Monitor will help to monitor the children through monthly visits until a CASA advocate is available. The Child Visit Monitor will visit a child or sibling group each month in the current placement location and then report back to CASA staff. Child Visit Monitors also help transition a case to a CASA advocate, allowing a smoother transition for the child(ren) involved.

Community members interested in becoming a Child Visit Monitor must be 21 years of age or older, have access to the internet for visit reporting, and be willing to travel outside Monroe County for visits if needed. This volunteer position requires approximately three hours per month of volunteer time and at least one year of service. A CVM does not go to court or participate in other case-related meetings. This is a great volunteer opportunity for someone interested in the CASA program but cannot commit the time to be an advocate.

Volunteer: Board Member Needed for My Flying University

MFU is a Bloomington-based educational nonprofit inspired by Poland's underground Flying Universities, which defied authoritarian censorship by teaching forbidden knowledge. We carry that tradition forward: our mission is to teach the topics that are being banned, discouraged, or distortent in public schools and universities.

We focus on censored topics, silenced histories, and banned books. We also provide content around media literacy and democratic erosion. Then, we help learners turn that knowledge into meaningful action.

We're looking for one additional board member who shares these values and wants to help the organization grow. We'd especially love to hear from educators and people with experience in fundraising, marketing, and outreach. But if you care about this work and bring good-faith energy, we'd love to talk to you regardless of your background.

Volunteer: Flying Faculty: Build Lessons That Push Back

My Flying University needs your help to create online lessons that unpack current events and uncover the stories history tried to erase.

My Flying University (MFU) is a Bloomington-based nonprofit dedicated to helping learners make sense of the world through critical thinking, media literacy, and historical awareness. We believe that when knowledge is under attack, learning itself becomes an act of resistance.

We’re looking for educators, instructional designers, subject matter experts, and those with relevant lived experiences to help us build digital lessons in WordPress for three of our core projects:

Read Between the Headlines, where we analyze current events from multiple perspectives to reveal the deeper social, political, and psychological forces shaping our world

Explore Silenced Stories, which spotlights people and movements whose voices and victories were erased or distorted by history

The War on Education, which focuses on the latest attacks, gag orders, and other news about K-12 and higher education

Connect With Your Community, which focuses on the history and current issues of Bloomington, IN, and the state of Indiana as a whole

No prior e-learning experience is required. If you’re comfortable with technology (or willing to learn) we’ll show you how to build engaging lessons using the templates and tools we provide. We’ll help you grow your digital skills while working alongside others who care deeply about education and justice.

This is an ongoing, flexible, remote volunteer opportunity that is suitable for anyone who wants to help make truth, context, and history accessible to all… and for those who carry the spirit of Bloomington’s creative, curious, and activist heart wherever they are.

You can sign up here, or, if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can complete a volunteer application on our website, www.myflyinguniversity.org. Please email info@myflyinguniversity.org if you have any questions or need any assistance.

Volunteer: Digital Club Host: Create Spaces for Learning, Play, and Resistance

Help My Flying University launch digital clubs that bring people together to learn, create, and stay grounded during difficult times.

My Flying University (MFU) is a Bloomington-based nonprofit creating spaces for learning, connection, and resistance through education. As knowledge, history, and truth come under increasing attack, MFU is building community-centered alternatives where people can learn together, stay grounded, and support one another.

We’re currently seeking volunteers to host, co-host, or help support a new set of digital clubs focused on shared learning, creative expression, critical thinking, and community connection. These clubs are designed to help participants engage with banned ideas, develop their voices, practice responding to disinformation, explore history through play, and sustain one another while paying attention to the world.

Finding Your Voice is a digital creative club focused on storytelling as a tool for advocacy and social change. Each week introduces a new storytelling approach, from writing and visual art to sound, media, and movement. Improv for Difficult Discussions is a club that allows people to experiment with both reasonable and silly responses in challenging conversations. Breadcrumbs is an action team that is focused on creating and distributing deradicalization resources, counter-narrative content, and empathy-first outreach materials. The Nervous System is a support and skill-sharing club for anxious activists. Spirits of Dissent is a cocktail club where each drink is inspired by a resistance movement, revolutionary figure, or banned substance from history, and is accompanied by a short presentation. The Graveyard Shift is a history-focused group that explores local cemeteries, obituaries, and death records to uncover erased or forgotten stories. The Unofficial Curriculum is a tabletop roleplaying campaign about clandestine education, shared risk, and quiet defiance under authoritarian rule. Inspired by the flying universities of Poland, the game focuses on collaboration rather than conquest. The Disinformation Clinic is a hands-on action group where participants diagnose misleading claims, develop effective responses, and take those strategies into real conversations and public spaces. The Crafting and Catastrophizing Club is a low-pressure digital hangout where people work on crafts or quiet creative projects while talking about the state of things. Organization: My Flying University

Volunteer: Spring Break Kitchen Assistants Needed!

Are you looking to make a direct impact in the lives of the most vulnerable in your community? Would you like the satisfaction of leaving a 2 hour shift seeing the difference you made in someone's life?Do you have some free time during Spring Break and want to serve your community?

YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!

The Shalom Center day shelter provides free meals to people experiencing poverty in Bloomington. This vital and life saving service is offered every day the Shalom Center is open, Monday through Friday. We serve around 60 meals for breakfast and around 120 meals for lunch

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We have openings for those that are interested in being front and center, as well as those who would prefer to work behind the scenes!

Our 7:30am-9:30am volunteers help with setting up breakfast, prepping for lunch, and cleaning up breakfast service. This position is a nice mix of guest interaction and quieter prep time.

Our 9:30am-11:30am volunteers help with prepping for lunch. This position is ideal for the person who wants to help but would like to do so when it's a bit quieter, but there is still guest interaction! WE ARE IN GREAT NEED OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SHIFT

Our 11:45am-2pm volunteers are front and center! They help with serving meals directly to our guests, as well as cleaning up after lunch service. If you want the chance to interact with our guests, this shift is for you.

Filling in during school breaks is an excellent way to be connected to the community, and have a chance to check us out and see if we'd be the perfect fit.

Minimum age for these shifts is 14, or 10-13 with a parent/guardian present.

Volunteer: Leadership Mentoring/Expertise

Elevate serves to connect experts in the community who are interested in short-term volunteer opportunities with nonprofits. Opportunities may include one-time consultations, a series of consultations on a specific topic, or working together on a specific project. It is envisioned that opportunities that work out well may evolve into long-term volunteer roles, which Elevate celebrates but does not manage.

We are interested in all areas of expertise that a growing nonprofit might need, including, but not limited to:

Leadership development and mentoring for Executive Directors

Mentoring for new Board Presidents

Finances (changing fiscal years, moving from cash to accrual accounting, etc.)

Human Resources (reviewing personnel plans, mentoring challenging situations, etc.)

Facilities/physical infrastructure advising

Legal advice

Succession planning

Board development

As Elevate identifies volunteer opportunities that may be a good match, you will be contacted with details. If the match seems to be a good fit of mutual interest by you and the nonprofit, Elevate will put you in touch with the staff at the nonprofit and allow you and the nonprofit to work out specifics on accomplishing the task.

Unless you request otherwise, Elevate will share your name and area(s) of interest publicly to help match-make your expertise with nonprofits who could benefit from it.

If challenges arise at any point during the volunteer opportunity, Elevate may be contacted by either the volunteer or the nonprofit to help resolve the challenges.

When a volunteer opportunity is complete, Elevate will follow up with the volunteer and nonprofit separately to discern the success of the process and any lessons learned.

Questions? Contact us at elevate@unitedwaysci.org

Volunteer: Club Riders Volunteer | Lincoln Street Club

Bloomington Skateboarders!  We need you!

In the Club Riders Program, program members in the Club learn all about bike riding and the basics of safety, etiquette, and skills needed to ride your bike!

Volunteers support the staff leading the program. Volunteers can contribute knowledge and help members who need a little extra support or a helping hand.

A great volunteer will have basic biking experience. This is a biking basics program. You do not have to know any special bicycle education at all.

Many youth have an interest in biking, but do not have anywhere to learn with help. Often youth try it once without help, fall, then believe they are not capable. This program provides them the step by step instruction that enables them to be successful in learning and falling in love with biking! Bicycling helps teach youth determination, focus, confidence and that falling is not failing and how to get back up and try again.

Bikes and helmets are provided!

We are looking for volunteers for our 3rd, 4th, 5th grades, and teen club rider groups at the Lincoln Street Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:45 PM.

If you are interested in volunteering on Tuesdays with the Teen group, please contact Remi Wigginton (cwigginton@bgcbloomington.org)

Volunteer: Animal Care Volunteers - Wildlife

WildCare needs volunteers to help with animal care!

Wildlife rehabilitation volunteers assist in hands-on wildlife rehabilitation for ~1,500 animals annually. Tasks widely range depending on your interests! Every day is different and while volunteering you'll work under the direction of a licensed rehabilitator to provide care for a multitude of species. One day you might be assisting in giving fluids to a Great Horned Owl, another you might be learning how to tube feed orphaned rabbits.

If tube feeding opposum joeys is less your style, some volunteers choose to prioritize keeping up with laundry and dishes. Volunteering is individualized to your preferences and wants. If you're timid around foxes but eager to save Eastern box turtles we are more than happy to work with your interests!

Our goal for every animal that comes through our doors is releasing these animals back into their native habitat. Once that time comes you will have the opportunity to open the carrier and watch the opossums, skunks, snakes, birds, etc. that you've cared for go back into the wild. If this sounds like something you would like to do, every pair of hands that we have is another animal we're able to save. We look forward to having you on our team!

If you are interested in saving wild animals, please fill out a wildlife volunteer application!

MORE INFO ON VOLUNTEERING WITH WILDCARE:

We hold permits at both state and federal levels which allow us to do this work Shifts are typically 3-4 hours long We also have opportunities in our education team, working with non-releasable animal ambassadors We rehabilitate opossums, skunks, rabbits, box turtles, bats, hawks, owls, vultures, foxes, bobcats, deer mice, and more! We are primarily volunteer-led with several part-time staff members

Volunteer: Goat Conspiracy Wish List

WHY DONATE? When Goat Conspiracy "transfarmed" from a for-profit dairy to a nonprofit sanctuary, we had to find new, diverse sources of revenue. We offer tours, goat yoga, and private and public events, but as a young organization, we definitely rely on donors to help provide the best lives for our residents. 119 goats need literal tons of hay and regular health checks and veterinary care. Donors ensure that they can live their best lives.

WHO WILL BENEFIT? Most of our time and resources go toward taking care of our animals!

DONATION DELIVERY: 6030 E Kent Road, Bloomington, IN 47401

CONTACT: Amy Osajima, amy@thegoatconspiracy.org, 812-727-4220
If you would like to make a donation, just call or email!

The Goat Conspiracy began as a small local sustainably-oriented farm and creamery. After almost a decade of working the farm, we began to understand gaps that could not be closed with respect to sustainability and animal welfare. In the winter of 2024, we began our "transfarmation" into a sanctuary/retirement home for our goats and chickens.

We would love for you to visit the Goat Conspiracy and learn more about our story, how we saw ourselves as an alternative to factory farms, but ended up realizing the impact of dairy among other forms of animal agriculture are neither sustainable nor truly in line with animal welfare. We offer farm visits/tours, yoga classes, birthday parties and hold a variety of events on the farm (follow us on Facebook or Instagram or sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of our home page).

THE BIG STUFF

Kubota or Gator style vehicle to help us get around the farm quickly. Even a golf cart would be great!

Manna Pro Pine Shavings for Chicken Bedding

Volunteer: Help Refresh Food Collection Barrels for Area 10!

The Area 10 Agency on Aging Mobile Food Pantry uses decorated barrels to collect food donations — and after more than a decade of service, they’re in need of a refresh. Some are painted, others are covered in collage art, and many are showing signs of wear.

Here’s what we need help with:

Stripping off old collage materials (magazine clippings, adhesives, etc.) Repainting barrels that are faded or chipped Reimagining and redecorating with fresh pictures or paint We have around 30 barrels, so this is more than a one-day project, OR a shared effort. If your group can’t take on all 30 barrels, that’s okay — we can divide them up. Every bit helps!

Please note: Volunteers will need to provide their own arts and crafts materials, such as paint, brushes, adhesives, and collage supplies.

Need help with logistics? We can assist with dropping off and picking up barrels to make it easier for your group to participate. Let us know how many barrels your group would like to work on.

Whether you're a community organization, school club, scout troop, or just a group of friends who love a good DIY challenge, we’d love your help.

Interested?

Please contact Suzanne Donnelly at 812-935-2553 or sdonnelly@area10agency.org, or Amy Wardlow at 812-935-2523 or awardlow@area10agency.org.

The Area 10 Agency on Aging Mobile Food Pantry provides monthly supplemental groceries to homebound, income-eligible individuals, helping them maintain independence through better access to food and nutritional education.

Volunteer: Diaper Drives

The Hoosier Diaper Program is Desperate for Diapers!

We need diapers sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (NOT newborn, 1 or 2) and training pant sizes 2T/3T, 3T/4T, 4T/5T, 5T/6T.

We also need wipes.

You can order them for us (we're not picky on brands) on Amazon via our Amazon Wish List: https://a.co/c8JApl5

We are also looking for local groups and organizations to run diaper drives for us.  We would prefer if you would do a drive for a specific size (or just wipes!), that helps ensure folks don't donate sizes newborn, 1, or 2, which we are well stocked on for many months.

We distribute >20,000 diapers per month, so partners interested in doing an annual drive would be amazing.  We're willing to help make your drive a success!

We do get intermittent mass restocks via the Indiana Diaper Bank, but it's not enough to fill local (and growing) need.

ABLES Duties for New Volunteers

Facilitate monthly meeting (1st Monday of the month) 5:30 to 6:30/7 pm at College Mall Food Court. Send out reminder email 2-4 days ahead reminding of meeting. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early. Greet early comers. Arrange tables in U-shape (upper level near Ulta/Judy’s Kitchen) Put out small ABLES signs on tables. Greet members/parents/staff as they arrive. (Everyone buys own food and eats). Facilitate small talk/conversations between you/members. If some member is sitting at another table, gently suggest they to move to the group table – point out an empty seat. When everyone has finished eating (approx 6-6:15) start meeting. Prompt as necessary and repeat info in person’s voice is very soft or suggest that they speak louder.  Praise as necessary and repeat interesting info. Plan and coordinate activities When everyone has had a chance to speak, start with ideas for activities for the month. Ask for ideas. Suggest activities you have previously researched (possible dates, cost, etc). Facilitate discussion about which activities members are interested in. If 3-4 activities have been suggested, go around the table and ask who could come to each. Then decide on 1-2 activities. Suggest dates, ask who can come on which day/time as members have varying work schedules. If possible, set dates and times. If not, then say you will send out email asking if which Saturday members prefer, for example. Remember that not all members attend all meetings and some may want input into date/time. Repeat info if there is a decision made. Some members want to write it down/enter into phones.  send out email in next couple of days with all info on activity, cost, date, time, members who plan to come, ask if anyone else wants to come. Activity planning could be done by another volunteer remotely by email or in person at meeting. I think it is better done in person at meeting. Close meeting and make sure everyone has ride home. I often take 1-2 members home when they live on my way. Other parents are happy to give rides.

Organize and facilitate an activity

Have info on activity planned, place, date/time, cost, which members plan to come.  Send out a group email with the info, listing members who have said they plan to come and asking if anyone else is interested, wants to come.  Make sure you have individual emails/phones in case activity needs to be canceled or someone doesn’t show ontime and you need to know if they are just late or changed their mind. Be sure your email to members contains your email and phone. A couple of members communicate by text, and you will need to text the info to them. Some activities are not time sensitive, such as a cookout and if someone doesn’t show or come late it doesn’t matter.Other activities have a specific starting time (hike, pontoon boat ride) and it’simportant to not start without everyone.  You will need to send out several reminders as the date approaches, all same format as first email and requesting confirmation for members planning on attending.  Come somewhat early to the activity. Make sure everyone who has signed up is there before starting (if necessary.)  Collect money if necessary or oversee members paying at box office. Encourage members to participate in activity.  Praise – (verbal/clapping) and encourage other members to join praise. Lots of enthusiasm. When activity is finished, make sure everyone has ride home.

Communication

Google group emails.  Add new members/staff/parents to group. Another volunteer may wish to take over sending out reminders of monthly meeting and activities or leave this to volunteer who is facilitating.
