Volunteer: Skateboard Volunteer | Lincoln Street Club

In the Lincoln Street Skateboard Program, program members in the Club learn all about skateboarding and the basics of safety, equipment, and skills needed to skateboard!

Volunteers support the staff leading the program. Volunteers can contribute knowledge and help members who need a little extra support or a helping hand.

A great volunteer will have basic skateboard or longboard experience. This is a skateboard basics program. You do not have to know any special tricks at all. Skill taught in this program are; Stance, Pushing, Stopping, Carving, Turning, Falling, Drop Down, etc. If you can ride a board on flat ground you have all the skill you need to be an expert in this program! The love of helping others learn to skate is the key to a great experience.

Many youth have an interest in skateboarding but do not have anywhere to learn with help. Often youth try it once without help, fall, then believe they are not capable. This program provides them the step by step instruction that enables them to be successful in learning and falling in love with skating! Skateboarding helps teach youth determination, focus, confidence and that falling is not failing and how to get back up and try again.

You do not need to bring anything. Since this takes place in our gym we only use our gym safe skateboards. We have all the helmets, pads, skateboards, and skate tools the members will use in the program.

You can sign up to come weekly for the program or can choose to come as a guest for a single session first to see what it is all about prior to committing to the full semester. If you come more than once you will go through out volunteer onboarding that includes and application, background check, reference check and online 45 minute safety training.

Volunteer: Circle Mentoring

Circle Mentoring is a unique style of Mentoring is especially appropriate for developing adolescents. A group of mentors provide a broad example of healthy human interaction that allows youth to develop inner resources based on a menu or palette of positive human behaviors. The group’s primary purpose is to create a safe space to develop the competency and character needed to explore and achieve important life goals. Circle mentoring is support. It is not treatment, advice giving, or “fixing.”

Volunteers are paired with a Lead Mentor, and will help to facilitate the circle. They will listen to the teens and affirm the gifts they see. They will give 2 hours a week to attending the circle at a school per week.

This opportunity takes place during the school day in our local High Schools.

A successful person is someone who cares about youth, wants to support youth through listening to them and affirming their abilities.

By showing up as a Circle Mentor, they are empowering youth to reach their full potential!

There are semi regular circle mentor meetings where we learn from each other about what is working/not working, and check-in. Training is required. You will not be in charge of youth or left alone with them.

This opportunity takes place during the school day in our local high schools.  Check with Monique about the specific schedule if you are interested.

If you are interested please contact Monique at mphilpot@bgcbloomington.org

Volunteer: Morning Animal Care at Shelter in Nashville

Help us care for our shelter animals in Nashville, while they wait for their new homes.

At the Brown County Humane Society, we pride ourselves on how well we care for our animals, and our shelter. Every morning, our staff and volunteers care for our dogs and cats by cleaning their living space, supplying new blankets and toys, and giving them food, water and treats. We make sure that the environment our animals are in is as clean, comfortable, and safe as possible. Position also involves helping staff with daily tasks like dishes, laundry and general shelter cleaning. Along the way, there are plenty of cuddles, pets, and laughs. It's a great way to spend time with the animals and get to know other volunteers, and it's an essential part of our successful adoptions.

Volunteers will need their own transportation to the shelter in Nashville, which is about 25 minutes from the east side of Bloomington.

You must be able to bend, reach, kneel and lift. Training is provided.

Requires one shift per week on a regular schedule. Shifts are from 9am to 11am/Noon depending on animal population.  NEW OPTION: If you cannot commit to a set day of the week, we are now accepting volunteers to help on a sign-up basis. We ask that you commit to one day at least every other week, but it will not be a set schedule.

Applicants should fill out the BCHS volunteer application online at: http://www.bchumane.org/volunteer/volunteer-application/

Volunteer: Goat Conspiracy Wish List!

WHY DONATE? Goat Conspiracy is always looking for kind donors to help us out!

WHO WILL BENEFIT? Most of our time and resources go toward taking care of our animals!

DONATION DELIVERY: 6030 E Kent Road, Bloomington, IN 47401

CONTACT: Amy Osajima, amy@thegoatconspiracy.org, 812-727-4220
If you would like to make a donation, just call or email!

The Goat Conspiracy began as a small local sustainably-oriented farm and creamery. After almost a decade of working the farm, we began to understand gaps that could not be closed with respect to sustainability and animal welfare. In the winter of 2024, we began our "transfarmation" into a sanctuary/retirement home for our goats and chickens.

We would love for you to visit the Goat Conspiracy and learn more about our story, how we saw ourselves as an alternative to factory farms, but ended up realizing the impact of dairy among other forms of animal agriculture are neither sustainable nor truly in line with animal welfare. We offer farm visits/tours, yoga classes, birthday parties and hold a variety of events on the farm (follow us on Facebook or Instagram or sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of our home page).

THE BIG STUFF

Our biggest need right now is a farm truck or van. If you or someone you know has an old truck taking up space -- it doesn't have to be pretty -- we will happily give it a home.Kubota or Gator style vehicle to help us get around the farm quickly. Even a golf cart would be great!

Volunteer: Monroe County Humane Association- Foster Family!

Join our passionate team at Monroe County Humane Association and make a difference in the lives of animals and our community!

For further details regarding our volunteer opportunities, please refer to our website and apply via the application link ; https://www.monroehumane.org/volunteer/

Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster parent for the Monroe County Humane Association! Fostering is a rewarding and vital role that not only helps provide care and love to animals in need but also directly supports The E. Susan Bartlett Crisis Housing Program. This program serves as a beacon of hope for individuals and families in immediate crisis offering free or low-cost support. Whether individuals are fleeing domestic abuse, grappling with housing instability, or facing unforeseen medical emergencies, our program provides essential assistance precisely when it’s needed most. By opening your home and heart to a foster animal, you are giving them the chance at staying with their forever home.

As a foster parent, you will be responsible for providing a safe and nurturing environment for your foster animal, and basic care such as feeding, grooming, and socialization. You will also work closely with our Crisis Housing Center Team, which collaborates with local law enforcement agencies, domestic violence shelters, social workers, and community shelters to ensure that your foster animal receives any necessary medical attention and behavior support.

Fostering is a temporary commitment, typically ranging from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the needs of the animal. During this time, MCHA will provide you with all the support and resources you need to successfully care for your foster animal. Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of animals in our community while also contributing to a comprehensive and supportive network for those in crisis.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please complete our online application, and a member of our team will be in touch with you soon to talk about next steps. Thank you for considering this rewarding opportunity!

ABLES Duties for New Volunteers

Facilitate monthly meeting (1st Monday of the month) 5:30 to 6:30/7 pm at College Mall Food Court. Send out reminder email 2-4 days ahead reminding of meeting. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early. Greet early comers. Arrange tables in U-shape (upper level near Ulta/Judy’s Kitchen) Put out small ABLES signs on tables. Greet members/parents/staff as they arrive. (Everyone buys own food and eats). Facilitate small talk/conversations between you/members. If some member is sitting at another table, gently suggest they to move to the group table – point out an empty seat. When everyone has finished eating (approx 6-6:15) start meeting. Prompt as necessary and repeat info in person’s voice is very soft or suggest that they speak louder.  Praise as necessary and repeat interesting info. Plan and coordinate activities When everyone has had a chance to speak, start with ideas for activities for the month. Ask for ideas. Suggest activities you have previously researched (possible dates, cost, etc). Facilitate discussion about which activities members are interested in. If 3-4 activities have been suggested, go around the table and ask who could come to each. Then decide on 1-2 activities. Suggest dates, ask who can come on which day/time as members have varying work schedules. If possible, set dates and times. If not, then say you will send out email asking if which Saturday members prefer, for example. Remember that not all members attend all meetings and some may want input into date/time. Repeat info if there is a decision made. Some members want to write it down/enter into phones.  send out email in next couple of days with all info on activity, cost, date, time, members who plan to come, ask if anyone else wants to come. Activity planning could be done by another volunteer remotely by email or in person at meeting. I think it is better done in person at meeting. Close meeting and make sure everyone has ride home. I often take 1-2 members home when they live on my way. Other parents are happy to give rides.

Organize and facilitate an activity

Have info on activity planned, place, date/time, cost, which members plan to come.  Send out a group email with the info, listing members who have said they plan to come and asking if anyone else is interested, wants to come.  Make sure you have individual emails/phones in case activity needs to be canceled or someone doesn’t show ontime and you need to know if they are just late or changed their mind. Be sure your email to members contains your email and phone. A couple of members communicate by text, and you will need to text the info to them. Some activities are not time sensitive, such as a cookout and if someone doesn’t show or come late it doesn’t matter.Other activities have a specific starting time (hike, pontoon boat ride) and it’simportant to not start without everyone.  You will need to send out several reminders as the date approaches, all same format as first email and requesting confirmation for members planning on attending.  Come somewhat early to the activity. Make sure everyone who has signed up is there before starting (if necessary.)  Collect money if necessary or oversee members paying at box office. Encourage members to participate in activity.  Praise – (verbal/clapping) and encourage other members to join praise. Lots of enthusiasm. When activity is finished, make sure everyone has ride home.

Communication

Google group emails.  Add new members/staff/parents to group. Another volunteer may wish to take over sending out reminders of monthly meeting and activities or leave this to volunteer who is facilitating.

Are you looking to make a direct impact in the lives of the most vulnerable in your community? Would you like the satisfaction of leaving a 2 hour shift seeing the difference you made in someone's life? Are you interested in learning more about people so often ignored in our society?

YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!

The Shalom Center day shelter provides free meals to people experiencing poverty in Bloomington. We provide breakfast for around 60 people every morning and lunch for around 120 every afternoon. This vital and life saving service is offered every day the Shalom Center is open, Monday through Friday

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We have openings for those that are interested in being front and center, as well as those who would prefer to work behind the scenes!

Our 7:30am-9:30am volunteers help with setting up breakfast, prepping for lunch, and cleaning up breakfast service. This position is a nice mix of guest interaction and quieter prep time.

Our 9:30am-11:30am volunteers help with prepping for lunch. This position is ideal for the person who wants to help but would like to do so when it's a bit quieter.

Do you want to help out, but really only have time around the holidays, or when IU students are gone on breaks? We need you! We are looking for volunteers to do regular, weekly shifts as well as filling in during the summer and holidays.

Minimum age for these shifts is 14, or 10-13 with a parent/guardian present.

Volunteer: Animal Care Volunteer

Want to help a mom opossum create a cozy den to raise her babies as she recovers from being hit by a car? Or feed a watermelon to capybaras rescued from neglect and abuse? Help shave a guinea pig before they get surgery, or take a giant turtle for a walk? Animals at the Pipsqueakery were all rescued from one sad story or another. Volunteers are what gives these lives a happy middle and ending. No day is the same and we care for a wide range of animals and do a wide range of tasks - volunteering is customized to your wants and abilities.

Daily tasks can be summarized as feeding, cleaning, and medicating as necessary. No previous experience is needed! Scheduling is extremely flexible, we ask that shifts are on average about 4 hours long, and we have a strong preference for folks coming by 1x weekly, however so long as you have eight hours in a month you're considered an active volunteer. We share a calendar with you and you put your name and the times you'll be by on any given day. New volunteers start in the afternoons and evenings as that best fits other team members availability, but once you're more independent morning times are an option as well.

New volunteers start in the afternoons and evenings as that best fits other team members availability, but once you're more independent morning times are an option as well.

Volunteer: Weed Wrangle-Sierra Club/MC-IRIS/Hoosier Nat'l Forest partners

Hike in the beautiful Hoosier National Forest and pull small populations of Japanese stiltgrass as you go!  ~ what we do matters ~

Join us partnering with Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter, MC-IRIS, and Hoosier National Forest to control Japanese Stiltgrass at Pate Hollow or Hayes Trail in the Hoosier National Forest. The first two dates will be initial 6 mile assessment hikes to identify the Japanese Stiltgrass and to plan our future weed wrangles here.

Tuesdays: July 8 Pate Hollow, July 15 Hayes Trail, July 22 Pate Hollow, Aug 12 Pate Hollow Saturdays: Aug 2 Hayes Trail, Aug 9 Pate Hollow, Aug 16 Hayes Trail

We've been collaborating with the Hoosier National Forest for 5 years and have seen a remarkable reduction in the invasive Japanese Stiltgrass. The trails are clear of the invasive weed and we can freely enjoy the wildflowers, and stunning hardwood forests.
It is tick season, so be prepared with long pants and shirt, hat and wear shoes with closed toes. Bug spray is a good idea. Bring drinking water and snacks.

Volunteer: Animal Care Volunteers - Wildlife

WildCare needs volunteers to help with animal care!

Wildlife rehabilitation volunteers assist in hands-on wildlife rehabilitation for ~1,500 animals annually. Tasks widely range depending on your interests! Every day is different and while volunteering you'll work under the direction of a licensed rehabilitator to provide care for a multitude of species. One day you might be assisting in giving fluids to a Great Horned Owl, another you might be learning how to tube feed orphaned rabbits.

If tube feeding opposum joeys is less your style, some volunteers choose to prioritize keeping up with laundry and dishes. Volunteering is individualized to your preferences and wants. If you're timid around foxes but eager to save Eastern box turtles we are more than happy to work with your interests!

Our goal for every animal that comes through our doors is releasing these animals back into their native habitat. Once that time comes you will have the opportunity to open the carrier and watch the opossums, skunks, snakes, birds, etc. that you've cared for go back into the wild. If this sounds like something you would like to do, every pair of hands that we have is another animal we're able to save. We look forward to having you on our team!

If you are interested in saving wild animals, please fill out a wildlife volunteer application!

MORE INFO ON VOLUNTEERING WITH WILDCARE:

We hold permits at both state and federal levels which allow us to do this work Shifts are typically 3-4 hours long We also have opportunities in our education team, working with non-releasable animal ambassadors We rehabilitate opossums, skunks, rabbits, box turtles, bats, hawks, owls, vultures, foxes, bobcats, deer mice, and more! We are primarily volunteer-led with several part-time staff members

Volunteer: Weekly Orchard Work & Learn Days (April through November)

The Orchard hosts weekly Work and Learn Days, from April to November, and all are welcome to join!

The Orchard's Work & Learn Days offer a weekly opportunity for community members of all experience-levels to help us cultivate the flagship Orchard site, while developing their own hands-on orcharding skills. The first of these each month begins with an Orchard Tour. We encourage volunteers to bring their own water, hat, sunscreen, close-toed shoes and clothes fit for the season. All are welcome, and no experience is needed – we’ll show you what to do when you arrive!

These events are free, and open to the public, with no registration or experience required (though we appreciate advance notice for groups of 5+ people). We simply ask that you dress appropriately to do outdoor work, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Snacks and drinks will be provided as well as any other tools you may need to help out!

We hope you can join us to get outside and enjoy nature, make new friends, and learn some sustainable, organic orcharding practices. All are welcome.

See you in the Orchard!

Volunteer: Orchard Work & Learn Day Leader

Work & Learn Day Leader

Are you passionate about urban agriculture and sustainable community building?  How would you like to help make a tangible impact that will be enjoyed and shared for generations to come?  The Bloomington Community Orchard (BCO) is looking for leaders to advance our mission - to dream, build and share an Orchard community, while cultivating thriving systems of growing and sharing healthful food.  We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals, who are interested in learning through hands-on education, improving local resilience, and making a sustainable difference in our local and at-large communities and food systems.

Why Join the Bloomington Community Orchard?

As one of the forerunners of a rapidly growing movement, the Bloomington Community Orchard is on the forefront of sustainable living and community building. Incredible volunteers have helped the BCO take root as a resource nurtured by the community, for the community. But our efforts go much farther. Each year we help educate and empower individuals and organizations around the world, looking to grow their own collaborative commons around our sustainable model.

What is the Work & Learn Day Leader’s Role?

As a vital member of the Operations Team, the Work & Learn Day Leader collaborates with the Operations Co-Chairs to help oversee the cultivation and maintenance of our flagship orchard site (at 2120 S. Highland Ave., 47401), while helping orchestrate the volunteer action and learning that takes place in our sustainable commons. Experience with gardening and/or orcharding is suggested, but not required, as we nurture a culture of in-action learning, and support leaders in developing their own skillsets in orcharding and perennial agriculture. The role is expected to take ~4 hours per week.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for individuals who are confident in sharing their passion for improving the overall health of the community, by connecting people with their food systems, and empowering urban agriculture initiatives through hands-on education - to help provide healthy food for the community to share and enjoy. We nurture a culture of education and empowerment, and want people who know how to enjoy life (and work), while making a tangible difference in their community. What kind of impact are you looking to help cultivate?

Organization: Bloomington Community Orchard

Volunteer: Learn and Volunteer with Rescued Animals

PEAK Animal Sanctuary is a haven for animals that inspires community and advocates for a peaceful coexistence with other species. PEAK stands for "People, Earth, and Animals in Kinship." We are home to dozens of rescued farmed animals including cows, pigs, goats, turkeys, and chickens, and are located in Freedom, Indiana.

PEAK is thrilled to be a host sanctuary for the LEAP program. LEAP (Leaders for Ethics, Animals, and the Planet) is a transformative education initiative that engages high school students nationwide. It offers an empathetic alternative to conventional agricultural programs like 4H and FFA. From September to May, students dedicate around 10 hours each month to volunteer at PEAK, where they tend to rescued animals, undertake infrastructure projects, and delve into issues such as veganism, environmental sustainability, and climate action. LEAP equips young individuals to confront and devise solutions for pressing challenges like animal welfare, climate change, food scarcity, and habitat degradation, culminating in community projects that epitomize their learning and impact.

PEAK will host a select group of up to eight high school students for the 2024-25 school year. Students will benefit from a blend of interactive lessons and hands-on experiences, enriched with leadership training and skill development. All LEAP workshops are held on Saturdays. Calendar coming soon! For more information about PEAK Animal Sanctuary or to apply for the LEAP program, please visit https://www.peakanimalsanctuary.org/leapatpeak or contact Natalie Levin at natalie@uplandspeak.org.
