Volunteer: BCGC's Great Glass Pumpkin PatchEvery October, we celebrate the season with over 1,000 stunning blown glass pumpkins displayed for sale on the Bloomington Courthouse Lawn. The enchanting atmosphere, complete with crisp autumn air and glass sparkling in the sun on haybales, is one pumpkin spice latte away from a Hallmark movie. Crafted by our talented glassblowing apprentices, each pumpkin is a unique masterpiece, hand-made with care and artistry. These exquisite creations are not just a feast for the eyes, though; they also play a crucial role in supporting our mission here at BCGC. The Great Glass Pumpkin Patch is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it also allows us an opportunity to teach glassblowing skills to our apprentices at a low cost. Volunteers' tasks include crowd control, crowd engagement, assisting shoppers, check out, wrapping, and more! Multiple shifts available throughout the day between 7 am and 3 pm. Volunteer: Orchard Work & Learn Day - Sustainability SpooktacularJoin a work and learn day on Saturday, October 11 at the Bloomington Community Orchard (BCO)! Learn about how the orchard functions and grows a wide variety of fruits, herbs, and more. Be a part of it all through some hands-on fieldwork. Prune, mulch, compost, water, harvest, and even taste the produce. BCO Staff will lead a tour of the orchard and provide volunteer instructions (no prior experience necessary). Dress for dirty outdoor work and bring your own water (there is no water available on-site). ... Climate change might be spooky, but you can beat that fright by taking action during the Sustainability Spooktacular Challenge, hosted by the City of Bloomington Economic & Sustainable Development Department. The Bloomington Community Orchard Work & Learn Day is one of four hands-on community events throughout the month of October, where attendees will volunteer their time with an environmental organization and learn about sustainability. Attendees will have the chance to win a gift basket prize at this event! The fun continues online on the Zero in Bloomington platform, where participants sign up to explore climate-friendly actions; each action logged from October 1 to 31 will serve as an entry into a raffle pool for a prize. Through this challenge, the City aims to raise awareness about how individuals’ choices impact the planet, and to uplift the goals of local organizations by attracting participation to their missions. Learn more about the challenge on the City of Bloomington website here. The Bloomington Community Orchard is an all-volunteer nonprofit (501c3), devoted to growing fruit trees and other perennial edible agriculture for the community to enjoy, while growing our orcharding skills through education and experience-sharing. The publicly owned orchard is maintained by volunteers, and the harvest is available to everyone. Volunteer: Diaper DrivesThe Hoosier Diaper Program is Desperate for Diapers! We need diapers sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (NOT newborn, 1 or 2) and training pant sizes 2T/3T, 3T/4T, 4T/5T, 5T/6T. We also need wipes. You can order them for us (we're not picky on brands) on Amazon via our Amazon Wish List: https://a.co/c8JApl5 We are also looking for local groups and organizations to run diaper drives for us. We would prefer if you would do a drive for a specific size (or just wipes!), that helps ensure folks don't donate sizes newborn, 1, or 2, which we are well stocked on for many months. We distribute >20,000 diapers per month, so partners interested in doing an annual drive would be amazing. We're willing to help make your drive a success! We do get intermittent mass restocks via the Indiana Diaper Bank, but it's not enough to fill local (and growing) need. Volunteer: Skateboard Volunteer | Lincoln Street ClubIn the Lincoln Street Skateboard Program, program members in the Club learn all about skateboarding and the basics of safety, equipment, and skills needed to skateboard! Volunteers support the staff leading the program. Volunteers can contribute knowledge and help members who need a little extra support or a helping hand. A great volunteer will have basic skateboard or longboard experience. This is a skateboard basics program. You do not have to know any special tricks at all. Skill taught in this program are; Stance, Pushing, Stopping, Carving, Turning, Falling, Drop Down, etc. If you can ride a board on flat ground you have all the skill you need to be an expert in this program! The love of helping others learn to skate is the key to a great experience. Many youth have an interest in skateboarding but do not have anywhere to learn with help. Often youth try it once without help, fall, then believe they are not capable. This program provides them the step by step instruction that enables them to be successful in learning and falling in love with skating! Skateboarding helps teach youth determination, focus, confidence and that falling is not failing and how to get back up and try again. You do not need to bring anything. Since this takes place in our gym we only use our gym safe skateboards. We have all the helmets, pads, skateboards, and skate tools the members will use in the program. You can sign up to come weekly for the program or can choose to come as a guest for a single session first to see what it is all about prior to committing to the full semester. If you come more than once you will go through out volunteer onboarding that includes and application, background check, reference check and online 45 minute safety training. Volunteer: MALL (Mobility Aids Lending Library) Wish ListMALL Needs Space!
Mobility Aids Lending Library is a Bloomington-based 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that collects donated medical equipment and distributes it to those in need. MALL provides an average of 7 clients per week with wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers, and other equipment free of charge -- and the need is only increasing. MALL needs room to grow! Thanks to so many of our community members who have donated devices, we have outgrown our rented room in the basement of the First Christian Church. Sadly, with our current limited space, we often have to turn down larger items such as Hoyer lifts and hospital beds, and we can only accept a few power wheelchairs and mobility scooters at a time. But with your help, we can change this! MALL is seeking a donated or low-cost office space that is at least 800 ft.² to accommodate equipment storage and a small office/client meeting area. We would be open to a space in a shopping mall, strip mall, office building, climate-controlled warehouse, etc. However, a self-storage facility wouldn’t work for our needs. Our office must be centrally located and near a bus line as many of our clients and volunteers do not drive. Downtown, campus, or the College Mall area would be ideal. We strongly prefer a space on the first floor with no elevator required for access. If possible, we need space in a building with a parking lot or ample street parking nearby. If anyone has suggestions for such a space — and for funding/sponsorship for our growth, of course – please contact us at MALLbloomington@gmail.com. Thank you! Volunteer: Adopt-A-Drain Volunteers
Needed Now More Than Ever!
The City of Bloomington Utilities Department (CBU) invites residents to participate in a family-friendly volunteer program, Adopt-a-Drain.
In this partnership, residents help maintain storm drains to reduce flood risk and increase water quality. Volunteers commit to inspecting certain storm drains on a regular basis -- especially before heavy rains and snow melt -- to keep them from becoming clogged with grass clippings, leaves, snow/ice, trash, and other debris. Prospective Adopt-a-Drain volunteers may learn more about the program and apply to participate at https://bloomington.in.gov/utilities/stormwater/adopt-a-drain. With over 12,000 storm drains within City limits, activating resident assistance to clear storm drains will help CBU reduce flood risk and increase water quality. Volunteers inspect their assigned storm drain(s) at least once per month, clear them when needed, and complete a brief Adopt-a-Drain report (online) on a quarterly basis. Volunteers may usually opt to care for a drain or drains in a location convenient to them. Brief newsletters, including related stormwater tips, will be sent monthly. To file a concern about a storm drain, residents may complete a uReport at bloomington.in.gov/ureport. GET STARTED TODAY! For more information or assistance signing up, contact City of Bloomington Utilities, Attn: Kriste Lindberg, Stormwater Education Specialist, stormwater@bloomington.in.gov , or phone (812) 349-3617.
