Volunteer: Courage to Change Wish List

WHY DONATE? Making a House a Home

WHO WILL BENEFIT? The title of our wish list says it all. When our residents move into our houses they usually come with nothing except perhaps a change of clothes. We want to make them feel like they are moving into a home. To that end, we provide beds, bedding, dishes, kitchen utensils, furniture, decor--anything that is needed to make our residents feel like they have moved into a home and not just a place to sleep. Donations of furnishings, bedding, kitchen utensils--the usual items needed when moving into a new home-- would benefit our residents and Courage to Change Sober Living as a whole since buying these items takes a chunk of our budget.

Volunteer: Backstage Support

ROK is seeking backstage workers to drive the cargo van, help load in and load out before/after each performance, help with sets/props/costumes organization and maintenance, etc. Most rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings, and most performances are on Fridays. We are flexible with scheduling around your availability.  All levels of theater experience are welcome!

Reimagining Opera for Kids (ROK) is a non-profit community arts and education organization based in Bloomington, IN.  It has twin goals: to introduce children to opera through engaging first experiences, and to give developing professional musicians the opportunity to hone their performance skills.

Led by Jacobs School of Music faculty coach Kimberly Carballo, ROK is a community partner in service learning for Indiana University students.  The artists donate their preparation and performance time, and ROK provides free performances and curriculum guides to K-12 students.

ROK has been enthusiastically received in many of the area elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as public libraries, home-school groups, hospitals, and community centers.  As cuts to education and the arts have increased, schools in particular are eager to take advantage of this opportunity for their students, which comes at no cost to the school system.

Volunteer: Volunteer with Pages

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project is entirely volunteer-run, so your volunteer power, experience, and perspective are absolutely essential! Many volunteers just show up for a few hours once a week or once every other week. Some come on a weekly basis, or take on special responsibilities with the project. The tasks that most of our volunteers do are relatively simple, but require a lot of creative and critical thinking. Most volunteers help by reading letters from people in prison who are requesting books from our project. They then search the shelves of our project, filled with books that have been donated by members of our community, to find books that appropriately match what the person in prison is looking for and package them with a personal response to the person in prison.

Other volunteer (specialized) skills typically accumulated after a few sessions:

Monitoring – Volunteer monitors learn the ins and outs of everything at pages. They then help train new volunteers, troubleshoot questions, and just make Pages run smoothly during our weekly volunteer sessions.

Package Mailing – Take packages to the post office. You will take crates of packaged books from the Pages space to the bulk mailing desk at the post office in downtown Bloomington. This requires a time commitment of 1 hour every week or every two weeks. This also requires the ability to lift crates of books (they’re heavier than they look!) and access to a car.

Special Requests – Scour local used book stores, library book sales, thrift stores, the personal collections of folks in your social network, internet book swapping sites, and sites like Amazon and Half.com for books that have been requested but can’t be filled from our collection. Volunteers filling special requests will also help to find books for programs inside prisons and jails like bibliotherapy groups, prison libraries, and discussion groups.

Sorting Donations – Look through books donated to us and decide what we can use, what we can sell as a fundraiser on the Internet, what we can donate. Volunteers sorting donations should have some experience filling letters to have a handle on what books are frequently requested from the project.

Internet Book Sales – One of our primary fundraisers is selling books that have been donated to us but that we cannot send, or are rarely requested on an Internet book sale site. Volunteers helping with this will post newly donated books on the Internet and package and mail orders.

Database/Web Developer – Add features and fix bugs for Pages’ database system. Volunteers for this need not be located in the Bloomington area. The database code is written in Python using the Django framework. Volunteers wanting to help maintain the software should feel comfortable coding in Python or willing to teach themselves.

Board Members’ estimated time commitment is 2-4 hours a month. There may be further time requirements depending upon time of year and area of participation. Board members attend and participate in board meetings on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the literacy office downstairs at the Brown County Public Library. Partners’ estimated time commitment varies as to level of support.

TEAM DESCRIPTIONS Tutoring Team

The Brown County Literacy Coalition collaborates with the Brown County School Corporation to help Brown County children reach their reading benchmarks.

Our tutors are greatly valued as they work directly with students in grades K-3 after school to support them in reading achievement and improvement. Tutors work with their tutees in public places such as schools or the library in a safe, open setting where other responsible adults are visible and available.

We request at least a one-semester commitment, and attendance at bi-monthly Saturday afternoon meetings to share experiences and strategies.

Background checks are required of every new tutor and are administered and paid for by BCLC.

Tutors’ estimated time commitment is 1-2 hours per week, which includes training and travel time to and from their tutee’s school. Tutors are also encouraged to attend occasional Saturday afternoon meetings, where they can share their tutoring experiences with other tutors and gain valuable support. Reading Superheroes

As a Reading Superhero, you will share your love of reading during the school day with a child at Sprunica Elementary School, 3611 Sprunica Rd., Nineveh, IN. The school chooses the children who can benefit from a “mentor” figure – an adult they can read to.

These are children who could benefit from the opportunity to interact with and read to an adult. This extra support is valuable to kids who just need a little extra support.

You choose your day, one day per week, Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Choose one hour starting at 10 past the hour: 8:10 am through 11:10 am; or 12:10 p.m. through 2:10 p.m. You will meet with two children, one at a time, about 25 minutes each. Book Distribution Team

Our book distribution team manages the Brown County Little Free Library program, sorts books, organizes book storage, distributes books throughout the community to book baskets at doctors offices, plans and implements book sales, and supports the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program.

Time commitment for the book distribution team ranges from 2 hours a month to more, depending on events, needs, and time of year. Marketing Team

The marketing team develops and coordinates our messaging across various platforms, including print and broadcast media, social media, website, printed marketing materials, and events. They ensure that all communications are consistent with the directives of the coalition leadership and the Board of Directors. Skill sets sought include proofreading, research, design, marketing best-practices, and more.

The events team requests 4+ hours of support during planning and implementation of events. Fundraising Team

The fundraising team works to attract funding that supports our programs and professional infrastructure via grants and individual donations. They often work together with our Events Team.

They utilize best-practices to develop and coordinate a year-long campaign that attracts new donors, regularly celebrates all donors, and engages the community via creative fundraising ideas.

Skill sets sought include grant-writing and grant research, social and professional connections within the Brown County community, a willingness to represent the literacy coalition at events where potential donors may be cultivated, and more.

They also spend time planning and helping to implement fundraising events throughout the year, including and the Annual Appeal at the end of the year.

The fundraising team meets semi-regularly for approximately 2 hours. Events Team

The events team works to raise countywide awareness of the literacy coalition through participation in parades, festivals, and more.

Events include the Holiday Light Parade and Toy Drive; the Spring Blossom Parade; the Nashcar Outhouse Race; the Brown County Public Library Fall Fest; Brown County Reads; Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Charity Golf Outing, and more.

Enthusiasm, sense of humor, creativity, and willingness to work hard as part of a team are the primary needs for this area of focus.

Tasks include painting, building, handing out books to little kids, planning, coordinating with businesses and individuals in the community, and more.

The events team meets semi-regularly for approximately 2 hours. More time is requested during the implementation of events.

The Operations Team cultivates our flagship orchard site (at 2120 S. Highland Ave.), and oversees the annual calendar of maintenance activities, while organizing weekly Work & Learn Days to serve as hands-on training opportunities for people to develop their orcharding skills.

What are the Operations Team’s annual commitments?

Each year we work to:

Refine and share an Orchard maintenance calendar with the community, keep the calendar updated in Podio and provide tips of the month for the newsletter to educate home-growers on the annual cycle of fruit tree care. Develop 10-15 orchard site leaders annually (including 6 active Work & Learn Day Leaders), to help nurture and care for the Orchard site. Includes further training of existing leaders and asking them if they want to be mentors to newbies. Actively encourage Work & Learn Day attendees to become leaders. Offer trainings twice a year. Coordinate with communications team on kiosk information content and updates. Offer at least 36 work and learn days annually that provide hands-on educational experiences. Maintain supplies for the orchard site Provide food for volunteers

How can I get involved?  Is experience necessary?

There are many ways to get involved, and experience is not necessary – just open-minded enthusiasm and a desire to learn and help! If you have or are interested in building skills in any of the following areas, the BCO Operations Team would love to have you involved!

Fruit tree planting and maintenance Herb gardening Pruning Composting Beekeeping Project management Work and learn day leading Tool and fence maintenance

Are leadership opportunities available?

Yes!  Team members have the opportunity to take the lead on or spearhead initiatives throughout the year.

What is the time commitment like?

Time commitment is flexible – it’s what you make it!  Team members generally attend a monthly meeting that lasts 1-2 hours, and support our team’s initiatives as schedules allow.  We understand this is a volunteer opportunity, and want you to get as much out of your involvement as you put in – let’s make a tangible difference, together.

Volunteer: Life Enrichment Opportunity

If you would you like to share your talents with seniors in your community, or if you are interested in participating in our campus activities and events, we'd love to have you. Our volunteers interact with our residents in a variety of ways. From gardening, exercises, cooking, knitting or playing games, we appreciate the many contributions that a volunteer can make. Simply spending time with our residents in the outdoor courtyard or reading the newspaper with them can make a significant difference in their lives. If you have a penchant for teaching, you may want to lead or assist in leading one of our lifelong learning classes. Many times our volunteers have skills and talents that staff members don't have, such as singing or playing a musical instrument. Nothing makes our residents' day or provides a sense of community like enjoying these forms of entertainment.

What is the purpose of the Volunteer Team?

The Volunteer Team collaborates with other BCO teams to help cultivate and steward the incredible volunteers that make our work possible.  This includes identifying and supporting the recruitment needs of each team, overseeing the volunteer tracking database, and organizing events and activities to thank volunteers for their contributions.

What are the Volunteer Team’s annual commitments?

Each year we work to:

Develop and implement to an annual volunteer stewardship calendar, to cultivate and recognize volunteers for their meaningful contributions. Build and manage the volunteer database, to track volunteers’ hours, activities and interests (for increased and improved engagement) and share regular reports and feedback with team leaders and the board. Identify how to streamline hours-tracking with an electronic tablet for volunteer sign-ins. Evaluate volunteers and collect feedback on improving the experience (in-person, by phone and via email). Host quarterly BCO orientation events, to encourage more community members to get involved. Host semi-annual volunteer recognition events (in summer and winter). Volunteer: Orchard Events Manager

Volunteer Events Manager

Are you passionate about urban agriculture and sustainable community building?  How would you like to help make a tangible impact that will be enjoyed and shared for generations to come?  The Bloomington Community Orchard (BCO) is looking for leaders to advance our mission - to dream, build and share an Orchard community, while cultivating thriving systems of growing and sharing healthful food.  We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals, who are interested in learning through hands-on education, improving local resilience, and making a sustainable difference in our local and at-large communities and food systems.

Why Join the Bloomington Community Orchard?

As one of the forerunners of a rapidly growing movement, the Bloomington Community Orchard is on the forefront of sustainable living and community building. Incredible volunteers have helped the BCO take root as a resource nurtured by the community, for the community. But our efforts go much farther. Each year we help educate and empower individuals and organizations around the world, looking to grow their own collaborative commons around our sustainable model.

What is the Event Manager’s Role?

The Events Manager serves as a member of the Development Committee, and oversees various fundraising and volunteer cultivation events throughout the year, including our annual fundraiser brunch, dine and donate events, and any other creative opportunities that arise.  The role is expected to take 5 hours per week.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for individuals who are confident in sharing their passion for improving the overall health of the community, by connecting people with their food systems, and empowering urban agriculture initiatives through hands-on education - to help provide healthy food for the community to share and enjoy. We cultivate leaders who can be involved in various stages of fundraising. We nurture a culture of education and empowerment, and want people who know how to enjoy life (and work), while making a tangible difference in their community. What kind of impact are you looking to help cultivate?

Volunteer: Orchard Volunteer Coordinator

The Bloomington Community Orchard’s Volunteer Coordinator is the point person for connecting interested community members with the sustainable initiatives and high-level vision of the orchard.  They actively participate on Orchard teams and committees, attend monthly meetings, and play a facilitative role in helping organize and manage community volunteers across various Orchard projects, programs, events and teams.

On-going Responsibilities:

Inform the local and at-large community about Orchard workdays, teams, and projects while answering questions and connecting volunteers to Orchard leaders. This generally takes the form of responding to the @GetInvolved and @Info emails (they both come through to the Get Involved email). This also means attending various events as the face of the orchard. Wherever you go, be sure to keep an eye out for people who would make great volunteers for the orchard or have organizations/ideas that the orchard can be involved in or support. We also promote volunteer opportunities and track engagement through the Bloomington Volunteer Network (BVN). It’s a website where we post work days and upcoming events and then those looking to do community service can find available opportunities.

Communicate with the Operations Team to identify large-scale Orchard site projects, and connect interested service groups to help complete those endeavors. This normally takes place via email. When requests come in, you should email @Operations with the size of the group and the day/time they want to come out. We try and get the group to come on a regular scheduled work day, but if that doesn’t work, we just need to be sure there is a leader that can be present. It is best to ask for a confirmation of how many volunteers will be present at least 2 weeks in advance of the day they are coming out.

Engage the Bloomington and Indiana University communities to raise awareness of the Orchard and share how individuals can get involved in our sustainable initiatives. This can take place by participating in the BCO-IU student organization, and generally being in touch with the Governance Committee Chair to help identify and recruit for priority leadership, team and committee member, and general volunteer positions.

Oversee and track volunteer engagement. We are currently rolling out a system called Little Green Light, which will track our volunteer hours and activities.  One of our Work & Learn Day Leaders will upload each workday’s sign in sheets into the system, but you will need to add other activities (e.g., class and event attendees) to the system to ensure accurate reporting.

Steward volunteers Volunteer stewardship is an important aspect of every community-driven non-profit.  Developing a plan for cultivating volunteers, and encouraging continued involvement will be one of the primary roles of this position.

Volunteer: Become a Volunteer for Cutters Soccer

As with many non-profit organizations that benefit our children and community, the successful operation of Cutters Soccer Club depends on many volunteers devoting hours to such tasks as managing a team, being a team treasurer, serving on the board of directors and as executive board members, coaching Community Soccer, helping to coordinate events such as Kohl’s Cup, the Hoosier to Hoosier Sale, the Club Picnic, Casino Night, the Soccer Golf Challenge, the 4th of July Parade, etc.

Most of these volunteers have several children and are juggling their volunteer work with full-time occupations. There are simply not enough words to adequately thank them and hope the satisfaction of knowing that they are a huge part of making the club one of the most respected clubs in the state is reward enough for all their time and effort. To be certain, Cutters needs their continuing support.

If you are interested in helping please contact Michael Nosofsky at director@cutterssoccer.org.
