Uplands PEAK Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Indiana's first farmed animal sanctuary, is recruiting dynamic vegan/aspiring vegan professionals to join our growing board of directors!

After moving in 2018 to our new 105+ acre property in Freedom, PEAK is currently home to cows, pigs, chickens, goats and turkeys. Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused and neglected farm animals, educate the public on the benefits of a healthy vegan lifestyle, and promote sustainability. At PEAK, we envision a compassionate and harmonious world where People, Earth, and Animals live in Kinship.

The position requires a minimum time commitment of 8 hours each month. 

The board of directors at PEAK serves as the management team for the sanctuary.  Our responsibilities include ensuring that adequate resources are generated, helping to build critical relationships, and shaping the organization into the future through strategic planning.  The opportunities for making an impact (and getting your hands dirty with our residents, if you like!) are endless.

ALA Unit 18 is partnering with Stamps for the Wounded. Drop them off at the Burton Woolery Post 18 and then ALA Unit 18 will send them off to Stamps for the Wounded.  If you cannot get to the Post, then contact Jenny Tracy jtracy@ciswired.com to coordinate a pick up.

Stamps for the Wounded (SFTW) is a service organization dedicated to providing comfort and stimulating activity to U.S. veterans through stamp collecting. SFTW sends donated postage stamps and other philatelic material and supplies to wounded, ill, and isolated veterans. SFTW has been helping veterans since 1942.

One way that you can help our veterans is to save / gather envelopes from the mail coming to your home, business, fraternal or volunteer organization, neighborhood, etc. You can then clip most of the postage stamps from the envelopes and send them to SFTW. We will send them to veterans to sort, soak and arrange for their own collections.

Postal stationary : envelopes with pre-printed “stamps”; postal cards with a pre-printed “stamp”; aerogrammes. These should not be clipped, they are more collectible as entire pieces.

Carefully clip, or tear the paper around outer edges of the perforations around the stamp. Do not clip off the perforations … this ruins the stamp. Please leave at least 1/4″ of margin around the outside edges of the performations of the stamp which makes it easier to soak the stamp from the envelope.

If clipping from an envelope corner, remove the back and side flaps.

Please do not try to steam, soak, pull or peel the stamps off the paper. Our veterans will do this, as part of the fun work of stamp collecting.

Please do not cut stamps from older envelopes (pre-1941) or from more modern envelopes if they have special markings, such as “First Day of Issue” cancellations, very interesting cancellations, routing markings or “Postage Due” notations, etc.

Postal stationary (postal cards, stamped envelopes, aerogrammes) should not be clipped.

Picture postcards should not be clipped. Postcards without stamps are also acceptable to send.

If you are in doubt about whether to clip the stamp from the envelope, please don’t. Send us the entire envelope and we’ll sort it.

Spay neuter saves lives! Since opening in 2005, Pets Alive has performed over 215,000 spay/neuter surgeries. Simply put, spay/neuter is the most effective and long lasting way to reduce the number of animals entering shelters.

Our mission is to provide the compassionate solution to end the unnecessary euthanasia of cats and dogs by offering affordable, high-quality spay/neuter services. 

The Pets Alive Wellness Clinic offers another critical service to ALL members of our community:  low-cost vaccinations, flea/tick medications, microchipping, heartworm testing and more. Income from our Wellness Clinic helps to fund surgeries, as our operational costs are not covered by what we charge. We rely upon the generosity of our friends who care about Pets Alive and the work that we do!

We're running low on cat food! 

We feed every patient as they wake up from surgery but we are running low on our supply! We especially need canned cat food to help support our Community Cat days– we saw 81 patients in just ONE day in April.

As one of the forerunners of a rapidly growing movement, the Bloomington Community Orchard is on the forefront of sustainable living and community building. Incredible volunteers have helped the BCO take root as a resource nurtured by the community, for the community. But our efforts go much farther. Each year we help educate and empower individuals and organizations around the world, looking to grow their own collaborative commons around our sustainable model.

What does the Board of Directors do?

The BCO Board oversees the Orchard’s strategic plan, while helping identify opportunities to help grow our mission and vision. Each month, the Board meets to discuss progress towards our strategic plan, and develop new skills to advance our individual and collective potential. We also hold two annual Board retreats to plan for our forward-looking growth. Innovations and inspiration are always welcome!

What is a Board Members Role?

Board Members actively serve as community ambassadors for our growing cause. As an all-volunteer organization, we also encourage board members to serve on a team or committee, to maintain a well-grounded perspective, and help connect the high-level mission of the Orchard to our week-to-week activities. What kind of impact are you looking to help cultivate?

Area 10 has an amazing, dedicated team of individuals who tackle individual home-bound seniors' home repairs and accessibility needs.  Our current team members are great with ramp building, handrails and grab bars. But we also get seniors needing assistance with minor plumbing issues, like leaky faucets, toilet flapper, etc. We're looking for a volunteer or two who are skilled in these household plumbing issues and good with troubleshooting. The volunteer work is as needed and flexible to meet your schedule. The Indiana Limestone Symposium (ILS) is a non-profit organization.  Its mission is to teach and share the art and tradition of limestone carving.  Its flagship event is held every June at the Bybee Stone Company in Ellettsville where carvers from around the country come to work on individual projects and teach adult and youth carving. The ILS has partnered with Monroe County Parks and Recreation at a new site at Karst Farm Park to hold events throughout the year for more opportunities to share the art of limestone carving.

We will need volunteers throughout the year at other carving events to set up/take down tents, tables, and chairs, greet attendees at the information table, and help manage the carving site.

The Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps is a group of volunteers that promote community resiliency and volunteer in times of disaster when activated. Anyone is free to join, medical and non-medical, as long as he/she is 18 years or older and does not have a criminal history. We are health educators, nurses, doctors, students, retired, teachers, social workers, technicians, government employees, office clerks, retail employees, and more- all professions accepted!

We volunteer in times of disaster in any number of ways, ONLY when activated. We are activated through the Indiana State Department of Health or the County EMA Director.

Buskirk-Chumley Theater volunteer ushers are responsible for making each event at the theater a success. Volunteers welcome and direct guests, take tickets, help patrons find their seats, hand out programs, and help to make the event run smoothly. Ushering at the BCT is a great way to get involved in arts and entertainment in Bloomington.

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is one of the primary venues for the Lotus World Music Festival, African American Arts Institute, Limestone Comedy Festival, Bloomington PRIDE Film Festival, Cardinal Stage Company, and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra. We are expanding patient transportation and are now accepting applications for Volunteer Drivers. 

Van drivers needed - van and gas provided - for veterans' medical appointments at Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center in Indianapolis. Drive veterans for routine appointments - hear their stories, visit, support them and laugh with them. Chose one day a month to drive - training and support provided. The schedule is provided - usually 7 a.m. - 2 p.m, depending on the needs. Volunteers will be processed as Veterans Administration volunteers, including fingerprinting, TB test, physical, and orientation. Shift flexibility is offered with time off as needed. Students and snowbirds are welcome. 

Veteran service organizations and volunteers throughout Indiana donate time and materials so that veterans have free access to transportation to medical appointments.

SCCAP Thriving Connections Youth Community Volunteer!

The Thriving Connections initiative is a strategy to build relationships across race and class lines and aid vulnerable families in achieving self-sufficiency - and to ultimately end poverty in Monroe County. Volunteers are needed to support youth programming. Your volunteer experience will contain lots of interaction with fun, friendly children and adults, taking part in fun activities that help the children grow and develop important life skills. A free orientation and training is included.  Limited criminal history checks are required. Internship and service learning opportunities are ongoing. 

Thriving Connections is an intentional way for people to build relationships across class and race lines to end poverty in their communities. The Guiding Coalition acts as an advisory board for the local initiative. It is a representative group that includes people from all ages, economic classes, faiths, political viewpoints and races who are committed to building their community and ending poverty. The Guiding Coalition member has three primary goals: Use their role within the community and relevant stakeholder groups to gain the community's support of the Thriving Connections initiative; Provide their energy and resources to contribute to the Guiding Coalition collaborating with the lead organization to implement the Thriving Connections initiative; Increase their own awareness and urgency regarding poverty by actively building relationships across race and class lines, and modeling the way.

Join an advisory group of the Guiding Coalition that focuses on a specific part of the Thriving Connections initiative and attend monthly planning meetings for that group.

Captain/Ally Advisory Group - Plans programming for the Weekly Community Meetings, Captain training, Ally training, and resource groups

Economic Stability Advisory Group - Connects Captains with employers, educational institutions, and financial institutions to increase Leader's resources and strengthen overall economic stability.

Funding, Recruitment, & Outreach Advisory Group- Works with the SCCAP Director of Communications and Development and be responsible for increasing our visibility and name recognition in the community through events, PR documents, and media outreach and will recruit Captains, Allies, Meal, and other volunteers. Leads the Thriving Connections community in identifying, discussing, and problem-solving barriers to getting out of poverty; Research and apply to grants to promote goals of the Thriving Connections Initiative; research, plan, and facilitate fundraisers for to promote goals of the Thriving Connections Initiative.

Talking about Change Advisory Group- The focus of this group will be planning programming on issues that our community feel is important and create additional hurdles in our fight against poverty. Some subjects to be addressed will be, but are not limited to, racism, the LGBTQ community, mental health, and both visible and invisible disabilities.

Tech Advisory Group - This advisory group works with all things tech to help TC stay connected and informed.  This advisory group will help TC collect and manage its data electronically as well as come up with new ways to help connect TC members to each other and to resources in the community.  Possible projects include: making sure all TC members are connected to email, providing technology (tablets) pre-loaded with links to information and TC notes/star charts, digitizing ROMA data collection and storage, and creating a way to digitally store and share ship notes and star charts.  This advisory group will also manage/oversee an electronic TC newsletter and/or website.  

Youth Advisory Group-Identifies age-appropriate activities and information to address resource areas. Recruits, trains and supports volunteers that work without youth and builds reciprocal relationships with other youth-serving agencies in the community.

Potential Commitments/Opportunities: Attend monthly Guiding Coalition meetings. At least one member of each of the six advisory groups will be present at the monthly Guiding Coalition meeting in order to report the goals and progress of that advisory group. Work in between meetings to accomplish tasks determined at monthly meetings (approximately 2-5 hours per month) Receive training in a model of understanding the environment of poverty and its challenges and strengths. Become involved in some practical manner with the implementation of the Thriving Connections initiative.  Guiding Coalition Chair or Co-Chair commitment: Create an agenda for the monthly Guiding Coalition meeting, including topics that will be discussed. E-mail this agenda to the Volunteer Coordinator, Thriving Connections Coordinator, and members of the Guiding Coalition Responsible for coordinating with staff and teams to ensure Guiding Coalition is working effectively.

All of our clothing sales through the shop subsidize quality childcare programs for families in need through Monroe County United Ministries.

You can help more of those clothes get sold by making them look clean and pressed and ready to fly off the shelves and into someone's wardrobe.

The director and her husband live on site and care daily for ALL the dogs from sun up to sun down. We have a couple of volunteers who come out regularly to assist with caring for the rescue and sanctuary, but we are in dire need of more regular volunteers – if you can come once a week or once month your time is most graciously appreciated.

Each volunteer will require a valid Indiana Driver’s License and undergo a thorough background investigation conducted by the VA Hospital Voluntary Service office.

The Bloomington Housing Authority Resident Council is seeking help between 1:30-5 p.m. on Thursdays with setup, sorting, distribution, and clean up at the weekly Food Pantry distribution at the Crestmont Community Building. The Food Pantry is open between 3-4:30 p.m.

Lasagna Love is spreading throughout Indiana! If you love to cook and are looking for a kind way to put that skill to work, we need volunteers! We are especially in need of chefs in the Bloomington area where we have many requests and very few volunteers.

WHY DONATE? The Project School is a K-8 chartered public school that focuses on individualized instruction for all students, including 30% of students with special needs, and 35% of students experiencing poverty. TPS measures its success based on the success of its students and families with the greatest need.

WHO WILL BENEFIT? Donations to TPS will directly impact the 332 students enrolled in our school, as well as their families. 30% of our students have special learning needs, and 35% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. TPS receives 67 cents in education funding for every dollar received by the traditional school corporation. We look to visionary donors to help us bridge the gap to best support children and families!

TEDxBloomington is looking to grow our team of video editors and producers. Some familiarity with video editing is preferable, however, we are also willing to work with individuals looking to advance their skills in this area. Volunteer opportunities include: helping to record talks and events (equipment can be provided), editing speaker videos, and/or producing short teaser videos for upcoming events. Commitments can range from helping with a single event or helping to edit a single video to being an ongoing or long-term volunteer role. 

TEDxBloomington is looking to grow its planning team to help plan for and host upcoming events. Specific volunteer opportunities include all aspects of event-planning: brainstorming, venue logistics, event marketing/promotion, website editing, writing copy for press releases, social media communications, ticket sales, seeking sponsorships, speaker and guest hospitality, video recording and editing, and video promotion. Volunteer commitments can be as short as participating in a single stage of the process for a single event or be longer-term and involve participation in multiple events. My Sister's Closet is looking for volunteers to help us steam our clothing donations. 

This is a methodical, rewarding process that sanitizing a clothing item while making it more attractive.  Most people say this volunteer position is very rewarding because they get to see wrinkled clothing transform while listening to their own music.

The steamers heat up to 202 degrees.  Safety Gloves are provided if requested, but most volunteers don't require them.  Only Adults 18 and over only can apply.

What is the purpose of the Jr. Stewards Team?   

The Jr. Stewards Team helps plan and lead classes, events, and activities for young, aspiring orchardistas around the community—in local schools’ classrooms, at youth organizations, and at the flagship orchard site.

​Reimagining Opera for Kids (ROK) is a non-profit community arts and education organization based in Bloomington, IN.  It has twin goals: to introduce children to opera through engaging first experiences, and to give developing professional musicians the opportunity to hone their performance skills.  Led by Jacobs School of Music faculty coach Kimberly Carballo, ROK is a community partner in service learning for Indiana University students.  The artists donate their preparation and performance time, and ROK provides free performances and curriculum guides to K-12 students.  

ROK has been enthusiastically received in many of the area elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as public libraries, home-school groups, hospitals, and community centers.  As cuts to education and the arts have increased, schools in particular are eager to take advantage of this opportunity for their students, which comes at no cost to the school system.

What does the Development Committee do?

The Development Committee raises the funds needed to support the orchard’s mission and vision.  Each year the Development Committee helps oversee our strategic development plan through grant applications, events, donor solicitations, fundraising campaigns and other development initiatives. Innovations and inspiration are always welcome!

What is the Development Committee Member’s Role?

As a member of the Development Committee, you would take part in creating and nourishing partnerships with local businesses and corporations, writing and sending individual donor solicitation requests, tabling events and interacting with potential donors, planning and executing 1-2 fundraising events a year, assisting the Orchard’s Grants Manager with researching and writing grants, and exploring new avenues for fundraising. If you have a particular interest in any of these areas or another piece of development, we encourage committee members to pursue those passions and take this opportunity to learn and grow these skills for a good cause. On average, this role takes about 5 to 8 hours per month including a required monthly meeting (1-2 hours), and the schedule is flexible to your ability to contribute.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for individuals who are confident in sharing their passion for improving the overall health of the community by connecting people with their food systems and empowering urban agriculture initiatives through hands-on education. We cultivate leaders who can be involved in various stages of fundraising. No prior experience in fundraising or development is required, just a willingness to learn and collaborate.

My Sister's Closet is looking for volunteers who can help us organize the many types of donations we receive on a daily basis.  

This volunteer position involves helping the store staff with the following:

Sorting donations clothing into categories by type, size, and season.   Labeling sorted bags of donations by size and sub-category and then storing them into organized shelving units for easy retrieval.  

Bringing received donations to the backroom and retrieving them when needed. 

Helpful for volunteers to know brands, but not necessary.  There is some lifting of donation bags of no more than 20 lbs. 

Minimum commitment:  2 hours/week.

My Sister's Closet runs and maintains a Clothing Boutique to raise funds for our basic client programming services.  We could use help in the store with several of the following tasks:

WHO WILL BENEFIT? The title of our wish list says it all. When our residents move into our houses they usually come with nothing except perhaps a change of clothes. We want to make them feel like they are moving into a home. To that end, we provide beds, bedding, dishes, kitchen utensils, furniture, decor--anything that is needed to make our residents feel like they have moved into a home and not just a place to sleep. Teach growing, caring for and harvesting herbs and vegetables to those with special needs. Volunteer will work with people with special needs to make gardening beds, prepare the soil, plant, care for the garden, harvest, and sell produce or donate it to the Food Bank. If you are enthusiastic and love to take care of plants, you're very welcome to volunteer with us!

The gardens are located at Hilltop Garden and Nature Center at 2367 E. 10th St. (behind Tulip Tree Apts.)

The programming/activity department is looking for warm and caring companions for seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia. Duties would include inviting residents to groups, leading small groups, and one to one visits. The residents enjoy groups such as crafts, small group games, sing-a-longs, and sensory groups. Originality and creativity encouraged!

One of the biggest roadblocks to cancer treatment can be lack of transportation. That's why the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides patients in need with free rides to treatment. Volunteer to drive when it's convenient with your schedule. Not only would you help give patients a much-needed ride, but you might also be surprised by the pick-me-up you get in return!

Become involved with TechHeroes Bloomington

TechHeroes has taken root in Bloomington in the Bell Trace community from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays. 

The program offers technology assistance for seniors, including help with cellphones, tablets, Facebook, Skype and more!

An important goal of the program involves connection. The program helps youth and seniors connect in a respectful, caring and genuine way that has meaningful interaction and engagement.
 
TechHeroes connects the generations through tech tutoring. Young people are able to mentor seniors in how to use technology to do the things they want to do - connect through Facebook, watch online programs, use a mobile device, and much more!

Currently, TechHeros is working with Serve IT students and Boys and Girls Club members to become TechHeroes and develop the program.

Your skills are needed to support the program with development, including a Linux programmer to create a video call kiosk, social media, and tech tutoring.

Our largest need is for 1:1 volunteers who are willing to “do life together” with a camper for the week.

Volunteers will help with bathing, dressing, transporting or whatever individual need your camper (soon to be best friend) has. Volunteers must be able to lift 50 to 100 pounds. We need at least 40 of these volunteers.

We are also in need of doctors and nurses to serve during the week of camp and care for campers’ medical needs.

All 1:1 volunteers must be at least 18 years old. ALL volunteers must undergo a background check before they arrive at camp and submit 3 references.

We have a few opportunities for one day projects. You will still need to submit a background check and 3 references for this great opportunity.

We are looking for community volunteers who can commit to one weekday/week (or more if they'd like!) to help staff our lunch room! This is a lovely opportunity to get to know 278 wonderful children, as each class travels through the lunch room. Responsibilities include light set up and clean up, distributing hot lunches, and chatting with young friends.

The Recovery Engagement Center is a hub for services with those trying to recover from addiction. We provide classes, recovery coaching, 12-step meetings, Friday community lunch, gardening, internet access, and other resources. Our goal is to provide a safe space and offer hope for those struggling with addiction.

Volunteers are needed to staff the front desk, maintain grounds, garden, assist with special events, and provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for every person that comes in the door. This is a great opportunity to provide direct services and help those in our community that are overcoming addiction.

If you are looking for a truly rewarding experience, become a Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) Host Family.

You will make a lasting impression on a child in need and possibly change the trajectory of a family.

Display Christ's love to vulnerable families in our community by becoming a host family with Safe Families for Children. Host families are screened and trained, just like foster parents. They will care for children on a temporary basis when a family is in a crisis and has no one else to call. The average age of a child in SFFC is 4 years old. The average length of stay is just over a month. All host families are asked to do is love and care for the child while the family coach works with the family to get back on their feet.

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project is entirely volunteer-run, so your volunteer power, experience, and perspective are absolutely essential! Many volunteers just show up for a few hours once a week or once every other week. Some come on a weekly basis, or take on special responsibilities with the project. The tasks that most of our volunteers do are relatively simple, but require a lot of creative and critical thinking. Most volunteers help by reading letters from people in prison who are requesting books from our project. They then search the shelves of our project, filled with books that have been donated by members of our community, to find books that appropriately match what the person in prison is looking for and package them with a personal response to the person in prison.

Other volunteer (specialized) skills typically accumulated after a few sessions:

Monitoring – Volunteer monitors learn the ins and outs of everything at pages. They then help train new volunteers, troubleshoot questions, and just make Pages run smoothly during our weekly volunteer sessions.

Package Mailing – Take packages to the post office. You will take crates of packaged books from the Pages space to the bulk mailing desk at the post office in downtown Bloomington. This requires a time commitment of 1 hour every week or every two weeks. This also requires the ability to lift crates of books (they’re heavier than they look!) and access to a car.

Special Requests – Scour local used book stores, library book sales, thrift stores, the personal collections of folks in your social network, internet book swapping sites, and sites like Amazon and Half.com for books that have been requested but can’t be filled from our collection. Volunteers filling special requests will also help to find books for programs inside prisons and jails like bibliotherapy groups, prison libraries, and discussion groups.

Sorting Donations – Look through books donated to us and decide what we can use, what we can sell as a fundraiser on the Internet, what we can donate. Volunteers sorting donations should have some experience filling letters to have a handle on what books are frequently requested from the project.

Internet Book Sales – One of our primary fundraisers is selling books that have been donated to us but that we cannot send, or are rarely requested on an Internet book sale site. Volunteers helping with this will post newly donated books on the Internet and package and mail orders.

Database/Web Developer – Add features and fix bugs for Pages’ database system. Volunteers for this need not be located in the Bloomington area. The database code is written in Python using the Django framework. Volunteers wanting to help maintain the software should feel comfortable coding in Python or willing to teach themselves.

Supply Chain Interns — help us to keep our back stock room maintained and organized so that retrieval of necessary stock items is quick, safe, and visual. Candidates must be able to lift bags and totes of at least 15lbs.

Social Media/Marketing: help us create social media content for our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. Help us tell the story of My Sister's Closet. Create engaging videos showcasing our merchandise and our clients. 

Boutique Interns — at My Sister’s Closet have an active role in working with customers, creating displays, working with donations, and keeping the store organized and running smoothly. No Retail experience needed, My Sister’s Closet will train you!

Data Management Interns — help to keep information coming into My Sister’s Closet organized and retrievable, allowing us to keep track of various contacts such as: donors, event participants and volunteers. This collected information helps us to generate timely invitations, thank-you letters, and gather information to help us apply for grants.

Event Planning Interns — helps us to plan various details for upcoming events to generate funding to help the support the community programming provided by My Sister’s Closet.

Bloomington SCORE helps local businesses in Monroe and surrounding counties. Counselor/Mentor are persons who have retired or near retirement with years of experience in their organization who want to give back to the community.

This experience may be in a large corporation a small business an educational institution a hospital etc. Professional persons with a background in law medicine etc. are valuable contributors. Mentors give a few hours a month meeting clients and providing counseling.

Mentors always work in pairs and it is a very rewarding experience. New clients are also welcome.

These are persons from all walks of life who in some way need help solving problems in their own business. It may be a person who wants to start a new business. Often managerial issues are part of the advice they seek. Everything is confidential.

We have an orientation training for new members. There are no significant limitations on who may volunteer.

Our Friends of Literacy help us with fundraising-event support, building floats for parades, handing out books to kids along parade routes, providing equipment and heavy lifting when needed, assisting with book sorting and helping at book sales, liaising with community businesses, and more.

Advisors are individuals in the community who help us fulfill our mission via best practices in the areas of financial advising, marketing, fundraising, and grant writing, education, among other areas.

Partners help us by providing volunteers and support for funding, fundraising, marketing, visibility within the community, and more. Partners may include businesses, companies, and organizations.

The Brown County Literacy Coalition collaborates with the Brown County School Corporation to help Brown County children reach their reading benchmarks.

Our tutors are greatly valued as they work directly with students in grades K-3 after school to support them in reading achievement and improvement. Tutors work with their tutees in public places such as schools or the library in a safe, open setting where other responsible adults are visible and available.

We request at least a one-semester commitment, and attendance at bi-monthly Saturday afternoon meetings to share experiences and strategies.

Background checks are required of every new tutor and are administered and paid for by BCLC.

As a Reading Superhero, you will share your love of reading during the school day with a child at Sprunica Elementary School, 3611 Sprunica Rd., Nineveh, IN. The school chooses the children who can benefit from a “mentor” figure – an adult they can read to.

Our book distribution team manages the Brown County Little Free Library program, sorts books, organizes book storage, distributes books throughout the community to book baskets at doctors offices, plans and implements book sales, and supports the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program.

The marketing team develops and coordinates our messaging across various platforms, including print and broadcast media, social media, website, printed marketing materials, and events. They ensure that all communications are consistent with the directives of the coalition leadership and the Board of Directors. Skill sets sought include proofreading, research, design, marketing best-practices, and more.

The fundraising team works to attract funding that supports our programs and professional infrastructure via grants and individual donations. They often work together with our Events Team.

They utilize best-practices to develop and coordinate a year-long campaign that attracts new donors, regularly celebrates all donors, and engages the community via creative fundraising ideas.

Skill sets sought include grant-writing and grant research, social and professional connections within the Brown County community, a willingness to represent the literacy coalition at events where potential donors may be cultivated, and more.

They also spend time planning and helping to implement fundraising events throughout the year, including and the Annual Appeal at the end of the year.

The events team works to raise countywide awareness of the literacy coalition through participation in parades, festivals, and more.

Events include the Holiday Light Parade and Toy Drive; the Spring Blossom Parade; the Nashcar Outhouse Race; the Brown County Public Library Fall Fest; Brown County Reads; Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Charity Golf Outing, and more.

Enthusiasm, sense of humor, creativity, and willingness to work hard as part of a team are the primary needs for this area of focus.

Tasks include painting, building, handing out books to little kids, planning, coordinating with businesses and individuals in the community, and more.

Volunteer mentors, age 18 and above, are matched with children in need of a positive role model and friend.  Match activities are based on the needs and interests of the Big and Little.   Minimum commitment is 8 hours per month for one year.  Volunteer must have own a car. 

Volunteer mentors, age 18 and older are matched with a child who attends the Boys & Girls Club after school program. Matches meet at the Club and may spend time doing activities at the Club, play at the park across the street, or explore the neighborhood on foot.  Volunteers must be able to commit to meeting one hour a week during the week for at least one school year. 

The Couple/Family Match Program is a part of the Community Bigs Program.  Children are matched with a couple of family that would like to volunteer together.  Adult couples enroll as the Big Brother and/or Sister and can plan match activities with their Little individually or together with their partner and/or family.  The minimum commitment is eight hours per month for at least one year.

The IU Office of International Development invites you to take part in a unique opportunity to engage with international high school students and adult educators from the Baltics in July and Southern Europe in August who will be visiting the United States.

These remarkable groups are coming to learn about community involvement, leadership, civic responsibility, and American culture. What a wonderful community Bloomington is in which to experience all of this and more! Participants range in age from 16-19 years old, speak English, and are eager for an American experience.

Program activities will take place between 9 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Basic host family responsibilities include weekday transportation to and from our office in the mornings and evenings, breakfast and dinner during the weekdays, 3 meals a day on the weekend, and inviting participants to the normal activities of your household. There is no specific type of family/home that is qualified to host.

Exact host dates are:

The Baltics (Latvia, Lithuania & Estonia) July 20 - August 4

Southern Europe (Spain, Italy & Slovenia) August 14 - 25

Area 10 Agency on Aging's Endwright Center provides a safe and supportive environment where active adults enhance their well being through health, fitness, friendship and creative arts programming. The Endwright Center is seeking volunteer fitness instructors and back-up instructors to lead the following fitness classes for our 50+ Health & Wellness Center and partnering locations:

We are hoping to find volunteer instructors with experience and/or training in these areas. Our Health & Wellness Coordinator is able to provide basic training for certain classes. An interest in working with the 50 + population is a must, along with having a positive and encouraging attitude.

Each year, FMCCS places men from our community in Kindergarten classrooms throughout the district. Five times a year, the MENtor reads aloud from a book that each child receives a copy of. Through fun activities and exciting stories, students are encouraged to love reading and take lessons from the books.

Research shows that reading with a child at home is one of the best ways to increase reading skills.  You will find lesson plans for each of these books to inspire your fun family reading time.

Volunteer mentors, age 18 and above, are matched with children attending Fairview and Arlington Elementary Schools.  Matches meet for one hour a week during lunch and recess time to talk, play games, develop friendship and do homework if needed.  These simple activities and the friendship that develops make coming to school fun and rewarding for both the Little and the Big.  Minimum commitment is one year. 

Academic Year in America is looking for families to host international exchange students for the 2019-2020 school year. Three placement options are available - Welcome (6-8) weeks, Single semester, Full school year. 

Minimum age of 25 years old and a background check is required, but any family makeup is welcome - single parents, couples with or without kids, single adults, etc. Hosting an international exchange student is a valuable opportunity for both the student and your family as well!

We are looking for volunteers in various areas to assist with resident activities. Volunteering may be offering companionship to a resident or assisting Life Enrichment Director or Coordinator with meaningful and scheduled activities. The Endwright Center and Endwright East, programs of Area 10 Agency on Aging, are seeking volunteers with clerical and/or customer service experience to help run our front desks in Ellettsville and our satellite location at the College Mall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
