Volunteer: Adopt-A-Drain Volunteers

Needed Now More Than Ever! The City of Bloomington Utilities Department (CBU) invites residents to participate in a family-friendly volunteer program, Adopt-a-Drain.

In this partnership, residents help maintain storm drains to reduce flood risk and increase water quality.

Volunteers commit to inspecting certain storm drains on a regular basis -- especially before heavy rains and snow melt -- to keep them from becoming clogged with grass clippings, leaves, snow/ice, trash, and other debris.

Prospective Adopt-a-Drain volunteers may learn more about the program and apply to participate at https://bloomington.in.gov/utilities/stormwater/adopt-a-drain.

With over 12,000 storm drains within City limits, activating resident assistance to clear storm drains will help CBU reduce flood risk and increase water quality.

Volunteers inspect their assigned storm drain(s) at least once per month, clear them when needed, and complete a brief Adopt-a-Drain report (online) on a quarterly basis.

Volunteers may usually opt to care for a drain or drains in a location convenient to them.  Brief newsletters, including related stormwater tips, will be sent monthly.

To file a concern about a storm drain, residents may complete a uReport at bloomington.in.gov/ureport.

Volunteer: Gallery Preparator Intern/Volunteer

Stone Belt Arc is a service provider that provides services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. One of those services is our art studio where our instructors empower artists with disabilities to grow their skills, create art, and then sell that artwork.    Internship details: We currently have a store in our primary location, and we also show artwork around town in galleries and gallery walls in restaurants.     We are looking for someone to work between the Stone Belt arts instructor and development manager on planning and preparing art gallery openings. This position would require the volunteer to have an interest in promoting art created by individuals with disabilities in our community. Other tasks beyond selecting and framing artwork include helping to set up art, tables, chairs, and equipment for event functions. Represent the Stone Belt during our exhibition openings and events. Provide directions and information to guests, and assist staff with sales of artwork. Assist staff as needed with tasks during events.  If the volunteer has strong design or organization skills we may ask them to help to plan and publicize Stone Belt's arts programs and gallery openings.
We are also looking for someone with website management experience as we are hoping to launch an online store to sell artists' work.
**Note all proceeds from sales go to the artists, Stone Belt does not take a cut    While this is a year-long need, we don't necessarily need a year-long commitment. We are looking for someone that can commit 5 hours/week minimum.    Preferred experience with art shows, working with galleries and framing.

Volunteer: Animal Foster Care - Provide a Temporary Home for Cats and Dogs

The Brown County Humane Society needs volunteers to provide temporary care for animals in need.

BCHS places cats and dogs in foster homes when they need a little extra care: a few days to recover from surgery; a few weeks to grow up; some time to receive medical treatment; a place to rest away from the noise and activity at the shelter.

For some animals, time away from the shelter is what gives them the best chance. Because our foster animals need a little extra care, we work carefully with our volunteers to find the right fit for their home and schedule, and they receive plenty of support. Our foster volunteers are a crucial part of our highly successful adoption program.

Interested volunteers should fill out an application at

https://www.bchumane.org/fostering/

Volunteer: AccessAbility Decal Project Surveyors Team

What if you were in a wheelchair? How frustrated would you be not being able to get into a LOT of facilities, buildings, and businesses in Bloomington? All over town there are places that are accessible, but there are a lot more that aren’t. We need accessibility surveyors to address this need! Read on for more information. The Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) takes the carrot approach (as opposed to the stick) and awards decals to places that are accessible. We also work with businesses and organizations, like the College Mall and the Monroe County Community School Corporation, to help them identify the barriers and make suggestions on how to address them. But we need more surveyors to make that happen! Training is quick and easy and enables you to start helping make all of Bloomington accessible! Join us. More formal info below...

Join the Surveying Team! Volunteer with the City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility as an Accessibility Surveyor. Volunteers are needed to help survey various locations in Bloomington to determine their accessibility for people with disabilities. Training and mentoring is provided to volunteers. Upon receiving an assignment, surveyors may complete the survey on their own time and, if desired, with a partner, but we ask that at least one survey assignment a month is completed (and you can suggest places to survey, too). Be a part of making our Bloomington community accessible to ALL! The AccessAbility Decal Program is a project of the Council for Community Accessibility to recognize local businesses that are accessible to persons with disabilities. Qualifying businesses are presented with a decal to display on their storefront. To obtain an AccessAbility decal, a business must pass an accessibility screening that checks parking; path of travel; entrance; elevators, stairs and railings; common areas; restrooms; and customer service. The CCA administers these accessibility screenings free of charge with the assistance of trained volunteers. Read more about the project here: bloomington.in.gov/accessability

Volunteer: CanINE Express Wish List

WHY DONATE? Help Keep Our Wheels Rollin' to Receiving Shelter Partners & Help shelter animals with our in-kind gifts

ABOUT US: The CanINE Express Transport Project humanely transports shelter animals from south-central Indiana, -- areas with pet overpopulation -- to shelters in areas in our country where there is a need for well-socialized, healthy cats and dogs. This interstate project, which began with its maiden voyage in December 2004 and currently has more than 30 partner shelters, has successfully transported 12,394 Indiana shelter dogs and 792 shelter cats. A benefit that wasn’t visualized at the project’s beginning is that our partners have shared best sheltering practices including spay/neuter education, medical care, promoting adoptions, increasing volunteerism, and political activism to build and grow State legislation related to animal issues.

WHO WILL BENEFIT? Donations to the CanINE Express directly will benefit south-central Indiana shelter dogs and cats to help them "go home" more quickly by changing their venue to another shelter where they will be adopted.

Volunteer: Age 55 or better? Join the RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program!

Are you age 55+ and looking for the best volunteer fit for you in our community?

RSVP 55+ volunteers serve in a variety of non-profits in Monroe and Owen Counties, using their experiences and knowledge.

Volunteer options include regular weekly activities, “one and done” community events, or a no-commitment weekly drop-in volunteer site.  Get started with a one-on-one interview with the RSVP program manager to help you find a volunteer role based on your unique interests, talents, and availability. Let us help you find your fit and join over 200 other volunteers to build our community.

RSVP is a program of AmeriCorps, a federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges.

Signature RSVP Programs: Caring Companions
Caring Companion volunteers make friendly visits to isolated people who are older and/or have a disability. A wide range of services is offered, from housekeeping to conversation, based on the needs of the neighbor and the interests of the volunteer. Thoughtful matches are made based on the abilities, preferences, and home locations of both people. Knit-n-Stitch
RSVP volunteers knit, sew or crochet a wide variety of items for those in need: stuffed hug-a-bears, lap robes, hats, mittens for children in crisis, patients undergoing chemotherapy, premature newborns, and elders. Much of this creative work is completed at home, but weekly gatherings provide a time for socializing, if desired.

Opportunity House
Opportunity House, located at 907 W. 11th Street, is a thrift store run nearly entirely by RSVP volunteers, from the management to the cashiers. In partnership with Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM), Opp House serves the community by promoting environmental sustainability through repair, re-purposing, and re-use of all types of household items and clothing. Opp House is open to anyone who wishes to shop there, but is proud to reach out to those who are in financial crisis or who have experienced a personal disaster, by providing household items and clothing to them without charge.

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Center
Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1010 S Walnut St., Perry Township Public Meeting Room Every Tuesday, RSVP holds a day for "tabletop" volunteer projects for local nonprofits such as assembling packets, sorting materials, arts and craft work, shredding documents, stuffing envelopes, etc. Enjoy coffee and the company of other volunteers! Join us for a couple of hours, or bring a sack lunch and stay the day.

Additional information- contact Amy Wardlow, RSVP Program Manager at (812) 935-2523 or awardlow@area10agency.org.

Volunteer: Used Stamp Collections Needed for Veterans

ALA Unit 18 is partnering with Stamps for the Wounded. Drop them off at the Burton Woolery Post 18 and then ALA Unit 18 will send them off to Stamps for the Wounded.  If you cannot get to the Post, then contact Jenny Tracy jtracy@ciswired.com to coordinate a pick up.

Stamps for the Wounded (SFTW) is a service organization dedicated to providing comfort and stimulating activity to U.S. veterans through stamp collecting. SFTW sends donated postage stamps and other philatelic material and supplies to wounded, ill, and isolated veterans. SFTW has been helping veterans since 1942.

One way that you can help our veterans is to save / gather envelopes from the mail coming to your home, business, fraternal or volunteer organization, neighborhood, etc. You can then clip most of the postage stamps from the envelopes and send them to SFTW. We will send them to veterans to sort, soak and arrange for their own collections.

Stamps that can be collected are:

Postage stamps, whether they are on paper or off paper.

Postage stamps from the USA or from any other country in the world.

Computer-generated postage labels.

Postal stationary : envelopes with pre-printed “stamps”; postal cards with a pre-printed “stamp”; aerogrammes. These should not be clipped, they are more collectible as entire pieces.

How to Clip Stamps

Carefully clip, or tear the paper around outer edges of the perforations around the stamp. Do not clip off the perforations … this ruins the stamp. Please leave at least 1/4″ of margin around the outside edges of the performations of the stamp which makes it easier to soak the stamp from the envelope.

If clipping from an envelope corner, remove the back and side flaps.

Please do not try to steam, soak, pull or peel the stamps off the paper. Our veterans will do this, as part of the fun work of stamp collecting.

Please do not cut stamps from older envelopes (pre-1941) or from more modern envelopes if they have special markings, such as “First Day of Issue” cancellations, very interesting cancellations, routing markings or “Postage Due” notations, etc.

Postal stationary (postal cards, stamped envelopes, aerogrammes) should not be clipped.

Picture postcards should not be clipped. Postcards without stamps are also acceptable to send.

If you are in doubt about whether to clip the stamp from the envelope, please don’t. Send us the entire envelope and we’ll sort it.

THIS EFFORT ALLOWS VETERANS AN OPPORTUNITY TO REHABILIATE, NETWORK, AND SOCIALZE.

Volunteer: Join the Orchard Board

Volunteer Board Member

Are you passionate about urban agriculture and sustainable community building? How would you like to help make a tangible impact that will be enjoyed and shared for generations to come? The Bloomington Community Orchard (BCO) is looking for leaders to advance our mission - to dream, build and share an Orchard community, while cultivating thriving systems of growing and sharing healthful food. We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals, who are interested in learning through hands-on education, improving local resilience, and making a sustainable difference in our local and at-large communities and food systems.

Why Join the Bloomington Community Orchard?

As one of the forerunners of a rapidly growing movement, the Bloomington Community Orchard is on the forefront of sustainable living and community building. Incredible volunteers have helped the BCO take root as a resource nurtured by the community, for the community. But our efforts go much farther. Each year we help educate and empower individuals and organizations around the world, looking to grow their own collaborative commons around our sustainable model.

What does the Board of Directors do?

The BCO Board oversees the Orchard’s strategic plan, while helping identify opportunities to help grow our mission and vision. Each month, the Board meets to discuss progress towards our strategic plan, and develop new skills to advance our individual and collective potential. We also hold two annual Board retreats to plan for our forward-looking growth. Innovations and inspiration are always welcome!

What is a Board Members Role?

Board Members actively serve as community ambassadors for our growing cause. As an all-volunteer organization, we also encourage board members to serve on a team or committee, to maintain a well-grounded perspective, and help connect the high-level mission of the Orchard to our week-to-week activities. Since this is an all-volunteer position, and we know your time is valuable, we make every effort to make your involvement a meaningful one, and promise to make your experience inspirational, educational, and connecting, both to your passions and our sustainable community. The role is expected to take 5-10 hours per month. A summary of Board Member roles and responsibilities can be found below:

Board Member Roles & Responsibilities include the following:

Be informed about the Bloomington Community Orchard (BCO) mission, vision, values, policies, and programs and promote the BCO in the community. Plan and oversee strategic direction of the BCO and overall board governance. Attend a monthly meeting, held on the last Tuesday of each month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and 2 annual retreats, held in February and September, which take the place of the Board meetings those months (date and time TBD). Serve as voting member for the BCO. Support the activities of our teams and committees (i.e. Development, Finance, Governance, Operations, Education, Outreach or Communications), or special assignments, as needed. Ensure the fiscal health of the BCO through sound governance and by carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities (e.g., reviewing financial statements, as well as active fundraising) – we are not a fundraising board. Make a personal financial contribution to the organization at an appropriate level of giving. Suggest possible nominees to the Board and committees who can make significant contributions.

The term of office is for 2 years, beginning in January of each year. Directors are eligible for re-election by the Board for as many terms as the Board chooses to elect them, provided there is a lapse of a least 1 year after every second consecutive term.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for individuals who are confident in sharing their passion for improving the overall health of the community, by connecting people with their food systems, and empowering urban agriculture initiatives through hands-on education - to help provide healthy food for the community to share and enjoy. We nurture a culture of education and empowerment, and want people who know how to enjoy life (and work), while making a tangible difference in their community.
