The Hospitality Desk is the hub of The Shalom Center day shelter. We are looking for volunteers to work the front desk any day Monday through Friday distributing guests' mail and messages, answering the telephone and taking messages, assisting with distributing toiletries and life essentials, and registering guests to take showers, do laundry, or to see a crisis caseworker. It is one of our most essential services. 

The Hospitality Desk is open during Shalom Center's operating hours, 8am-4pm Monday through Friday. Volunteer shifts are 2 hours long (8-10am, 10am-12pm, 12-2pm, and 2-4pm).

The Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) will join area fathers, father figures, mentors, and role models to welcome students back to school in person Wednesday, August 5 at 8:15 a.m. at Fairview Elementary School, 500 West 7th Street.

Volunteers are invited to register using the 2026 Million Father March Registration Form.

The event marks the tenth year of the Million Fathers March (MFM) in Bloomington, part of a national opportunity for dads, uncles, grandfathers, coaches, mentors, clergy, men’s groups and organizations to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children throughout the school year by escorting children to school.  Although this event was created for Black men, the CSBM encourages men and women of all races, nationalities, and faith backgrounds to support them by taking their children to school on the first day.  The CSBM encourages males who are unable to join the MFM at Fairview to get involved with a local school to support youth in Bloomington in other ways.

Volunteers help fill grocery orders, sort and organize food donations, restock pantry shelves, and assist with other pantry tasks as needed. Whether you're looking to give back, meet new people, or make a difference in your community, we'd love to have you on our team. Hoosier Hills Food Bank hosts the Bloomington Community Book Fair October 15-20, 2026 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. The book fair features over 100,000 items – books and much more. There are specialty areas with large collections of children’s books, rare and collectible “better books,” horror and science fiction books, games and puzzles, comics, stamps and coins, and a big media section with DVDs, CDs, records, and tapes all at great, low prices.

We are looking for a compassionate and dependable volunteer to support our Mini Pantry at Pathways. This role plays an important part in helping provide food and essential items to families in our Compass program. Volunteers will assist with organizing, restocking, and supporting families during pantry visits in a welcoming and respectful environment.

SEASONAL REQUESTS:

New Hope for Families' Early Learning Center is seeking several volunteers to assist with resetting our classrooms in preparation for the new academic year.  Tasks may include deep-cleaning our four classrooms, moving furniture, patching drywall, painting, and assembling cribs.

Volunteers will be needed on Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 4 between the hours of 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.  Two shifts will be available each day:  8:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 12:00 - 4:00 PM.  You may sign up for more than one shift if your schedule allows.

All volunteer shifts will take place in our Early Learning Center located at 1140 S Morton St, Bloomington.

Teens age 14 - 15 may volunteer with a parent; age 16 - 17 may volunteer alone with a signed parent authorization form.

Cleanup

Duties: Packing up remaining items and preparing for them to be picked up. Cleaning up the sale site and breaking down tables, moving items back to the BCHS barn location and more. Theses are more physical days, but there will be some easier duties as possible.

Customer service is the number one goal these days! Simply offering a smile and helping to point shoppers in the right direction of what they are looking for. Happy customers spend more money. Other duties will be keeping designated areas cleaned and looking nice. We could also use muscles these days to move and load larger items that are purchased.

Even if you cannot help for the entire day, your help is still greatly needed! Whether you can do a few hours, half days or full days, it will all be incredibly valuable. There is no such thing as enough help during this event so a group or company who is looking for a group volunteering project, this would be a great opportunity!

Donation Processing

Duties: Main need is pricing donated items. If pricing isn’t your cup of tea, there is also a need for help unloading donations, cleaning items, sorting and organizing to prep for the sale.

Pre-Sale Prep

Duties: These two days will include setting up the sale items and getting the event area fully set up. We will need volunteers to merchandise and display donated items to appeal to the shoppers. There is also a great need for heavy lifting during these days. We will have to move and arrange larger items that have been donated.

Wednesday, Aug. 12th – 8am to end (roughly 6pm)

Help Area 10 re-stock our Mobile Food Pantry shelves for homebound seniors. We need volunteers to accept food donations at 2 Bloomington Kroger locations on Saturday, August 15 from 9am-2pm (Kroger at 1825 N Kinser Pike and Kroger at 1175 S College Mall Road). This opportunity may be broken down into shifts.

We also need volunteers to help un-stuff the buses at our Area 10 offices from 2pm-4pm (631 W Edgewood Dr in Ellettsville).

Taste a rainbow of tomatoes at the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market!

Duties: Assist with setup and teardown of the event, and cut and serve tomatoes for sampling.

Training: On-site training provided.

The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra is in need of a Treasurer. Our Treasurer is responsible for monthly reports to the Board, reconciling bank statements, helping create annual budgets, and getting Federal and State taxes and reporting done on time.

This volunteer position would be perfect for someone looking to get involved with an established local non-profit, make valuable professional connections, and really make a difference in our community. 

Our ideal applicant would possess a mix of the following skills/experience:

- familiarity with Quickbooks (online)
- knowledge of non-profit tax filing requirements
- ability to work with a team of other volunteers to prepare our annual budget
- willingness to take a leadership role on our Operations/Development Committee
- ability to attend monthly Board meetings (in person or via Zoom)

Twice a year the Boys & Girls Clubs hosts a dance that is open to all families in the community to come and dance the night away!  Over a hundred families come and participate in these events and we need you to help make the night one to remember!

This year the Lincoln Street Club will be combining the Fall Ball and the Halloween Party into one spooky fun night with this years Monster Mash dance!

This year the event will take place on Friday, October 23rd at the Lincoln Street Club.

The Event Crew will be responsible for helping to run the event activities and deliver all the joy and positive energy! This can include assisting with crafts, running the photo booth, making slime, leading karaoke, face painting, snacks, running games, manning the bounce house, parking and of course fun and dancing!  All the great activities that will make this a night to remember!

The volunteer opportunity will run from 5:30-8:30 PM at the Lincoln Street Club

This opportunity does not require any volunteer onboarding and is a great way to make a difference and see all the joy this event brings!

Joining the Boys & Girls Club as a guest career presenter is a great way to achieve both!

We are looking for businesses and individuals that would like to come in and share information on their career, why they chose it, and how they got there with the teens across our Clubs!

Presentations are generally around 30 minutes and guest should plan to be at the Club for an hour.  The rest of the time our staff will help you with the community builder, question session, reflection, and recognition that will round out the program.

If you sign up we will provide you a guide with tips and tricks for an engaging presentation and answer any questions you may have to help set you up for success!

Our market needs help for set up and tear down each week and deliveries 
Set up consists of setting up tables, chairs, pack CSA and order bags, process veggies from the greenhouse.
Tear down: put tables and chairs away, sweep and clean floors, tables and chairs. Clean and wash dishes used during market. 
Delivery help with CSA deliveries in town & county deliveries.

Market set up and tear down volunteers could pick either or or both. Stay just for set up, come just for tear down or be there for both.
Delivery volunteers only need to be there to pick up deliveries about 2hrs before end of market. OR stay for the whole market. 

Looking for weekly volunteers to help keep the greenhouse weed free, harvest veggies, plant seeds/plants and help our Greenhouse manager.

Friend's Place is Beacon, Inc.'s overnight shelter. We are open 7 days a week and we need YOU!

Volunteers at Friend's Place work a shift of 5pm-7pm and assist staff with checking people in for the night, handing out toiletries and various OTC medicines, light cleaning, and other tasks needed to ensure a smooth check in. 

We are looking for someone to work one day a week, but we also need people who are only available during holidays and IU breaks to help cover shifts!

The volunteers are some of the first people our guests see when they enter their safe space, and the feeling our volunteers get after helping someone get settled in for the evening, knowing they are finally safe and warm, is priceless. 

If you are looking for a two-hour weekly commitment that will directly impact someone's life for the better, this is the place!

Come join us at the HHFB Garden at Will Detmer Park! We have 1 acre of land where we grow food for our community. Everything we grow goes to our over 100 partner agencies in 6 counties. We offer opportunities on Mondays and Fridays from 930am-Noon and are always in need of help!

We are looking for an animal communicator/medium to assist us with supporting our shelter animals. This  position was created in 2024 when a professional Animal Communicator contacted us after being turned away from another organization. We are dedicated to keeping this opportunity going due to the remarkable benefits of her service. At the Bloomington Animal Shelter, we respect the different skills and capabilities of such professionals, and wish to do everything we can for our animals, so we are in search of another individual to volunteer with in this capacity. If you are an established Animal Communicator or medium and are interested in assisting with shelter animals, please respond to this opportunity. Unlike other volunteer positions, applicants will be interviewed by the Volunteer Program Director prior to placement. Please respond if you would like to add joy, support, and comfort to our homeless pet population. 

Education and Outreach (EO): The primary objective of the Education and Outreach Committee is to support the orchestra's mission of promoting a lifelong appreciation of and enthusiasm for music through activities such as the Youth Concerto Competition, the Children’s Instrument Recovery Program (ChIRP), side-by-side concerts, the Musical Ambassadors and Meet the Instruments Programs, and others. This committee also is responsible for representing the BSO at community events such as the Fourth Street Festival of the Arts.

Marketing and Communications (MC): The primary objective of the Marketing and Communications Committee is to promote the orchestra through advertising, earned media coverage, digital media, printed materials, merchandise, and other promotional efforts with the aim of increasing visibility, ticket sales, donations, and volunteer service. The committee also is responsible for managing and protecting the BSO brand.

Operations and Development (O/D): The primary objectives of the Operations and Development Committee are to secure funding (e.g., planned giving, sponsorships, advertising sales, individual donations), oversee the allocation of resources, and manage major changes in organizational operations.

Governance Committee (GC): The primary objectives of the Governance Committee are to recruit and retain effective board members, regularly monitor board performance, and strategize how the board can continue to develop to support the mission. The committee shall ensure that all board and committee projects/actions are actively working toward the organization’s objectives and regularly evaluate committee performance.

Blue Door is our annual donor celebration cookout at our Camp Rock location on Lake Lemon.

We are unable to do short-term volunteering due to the amount of training required to keep everyone safe, so volunteers must serve a minimum of 6 months of service, and are welcome to stay longer, of course! 

Volunteers are required to complete a 2-hour weekly shift (some positions have longer shifts) and serve a minimum of 6 months(aside from breaks and vacations). Volunteers who are 13-15 years of age must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times. Volunteers aged 16 yrs and older may volunteer on their own.

All applicants must pass our screening process, and cannot have a negative history with the Bloomington Animal Shelter, or have a history of any violent, severe, or animal-related offenses. We reserve the right to refuse an individual if we feel it is in the best interest of the Bloomington Animal Shelter and the animals for which we provide care. 

Bloomington Skateboarders!  We need you!

We are seeking volunteers for the 26-27 School Year!

In the Club Skateboard Program, program members in the Club learn all about skateboarding and the basics of safety, equipment, and skills needed to skateboard!

Volunteers support the staff leading the program. Volunteers can contribute knowledge and help members who need a little extra support or a helping hand.

A great volunteer will have basic skateboard or longboard experience. This is a skateboard basics program. You do not have to know any tricks at all.

Skill taught in this program are; Stance, Pushing, Stopping, Carving, Turning, Falling, Drop Down, etc. If you can ride a board on flat ground you have all the skill you need to be an expert in this program! The love of helping others learn to skate is the key to a great experience.

Many youth have an interest in skateboarding but do not have anywhere to learn with help. Often youth try it once without help, fall, then believe they are not capable. This program provides them the step by step instruction that enables them to be successful in learning and falling in love with skating! Skateboarding helps teach youth determination, focus, confidence and that falling is not failing and how to get back up and try again.

You do not need to bring anything. Since this takes place in our gym we only use our gym safe skateboards. We have all the helmets, pads, skateboards, and skate tools the members will use in the program.

You can sign up to come weekly for the program or can choose to come as a guest for a single session first to see what it is all about prior to committing to the full semester. If you come more than once you will go through out volunteer onboarding that includes and application, background check, reference check and online 45 minute safety training.

This program will run for 10 weeks in September-November

This is one of the largest needs and the greatest impact on the youth!

You can make a difference for a child in our community by becoming a Club tutor! Help a child learn and close gaps in Math or Language Arts during the after school hours at our Bloomington or Ellettsville locations. Training and task support provided, background check and an interview required. This is a semester long volunteer opportunity (10 weeks). Every new volunteer starts off with a quick 15 minute phone call where I can explain the program to you, ask a few questions, and give you the opportunity to ask yours before you commit to the tutoring program. We like to have FUN! Our members know that coming to tutoring is an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun while doing it. Join us!

Our tutors love what they do and the impact they have on the youth of our community:

Applicants should be able to:
Plan tutoring sessions that are engaging to students
Use visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning methods
Tutor in math and/or reading across multiple grade levels
Keep detailed records, monitor student progress, and provide feedback
Manage children K-12 in focused activities in a small group setting
Communicate with other students, other tutors, and staff effectively
Complete training modules successfully

Circle Mentoring is a unique style of Mentoring and is especially appropriate for developing adolescents. A group of mentors provide a broad example of healthy human interaction that allows youth to develop inner resources based on a menu or palette of positive human behaviors. The group’s primary purpose is to create a safe space to develop the competency and character needed to explore and achieve important life goals. Circle mentoring is support. It is not treatment, advice giving, or “fixing.”

Volunteers are paired with a Lead Mentor, and will help to facilitate the circle. They will listen to the teens and affirm the gifts they see. They will give 2 hours a week to attending the circle at a school per week.

This opportunity takes place during the school day in our local High Schools and relies on volunteers who can commit to the full semester.

A successful person is someone who cares about youth, wants to support youth through listening to them and affirming their abilities.

By showing up as a Circle Mentor, they are empowering youth to reach their full potential!

There are semi regular circle mentor meetings where we learn from each other about what is working/not working, and check-in. Training is required. You will not be in charge of youth or left alone with them.

The NAMI Greater Bloomington Area Chapter, Centerstone, and Clubhouse International are teaming up to bring a Clubhouse to Bloomington! We are looking for volunteers to join our planning team and make this a reality.

What is Clubhouse? The Clubhouse is a world-renowned, evidence-based community where individuals with severe mental illness (called "members") get their needs met and also feel needed as well. Following a "work-ordered day", members voluntarily work in various units to support the maintenance and growth of the clubhouse. Through this, the members gain an uplifting community, an individual sense of purpose, and opportunities to learn skills and reach goals. Bloomington is one of the largest cities in Indiana without a clubhouse, so let's make one happen! 

s we get the Clubhouse off the ground, we are actively looking to:

1) Get passionate individuals to join our team in bringing this to life! 

2) Spread the word to providers, organizations, employers, funders, and individuals with mental health difficulties and their families.

Help the Taste of Bloomington minimize the amount of food waste entering the landfill by being part of GardenQuest’s food waste diversion team! Your role will be to teach festival participants how to separate their food waste from what can be recycled and what must be thrown away.

If you volunteer during the last shift of Saturday evening, you may also have the opportunity to help pack up leftover meals from vendors for redistribution to Monroe County residents experiencing food insecurity.

This is a family-friendly and teen-friendly opportunity! Any child younger than 12-years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Are you ready to change a child's story?

CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. As a CASA you establish and maintain contact with a child. CASA advocates are community volunteers who are professionally trained to gather information about the child and his/her family, identify needs and possible services, and speak on behalf of the child in court. They also monitor court orders and case plans to help keep the case moving forward. Responsibilities include meeting with the child monthly, communicating with case managers, parents, and foster parents, writing reports, and attending court hearings.

Our waitlist is growing, but our list of available volunteers is not. CASA needs caring, compassionate adult volunteers ready to be a consistent figure in a child's life and speak on their behalf in court.

Monroe County CASA advocates for over 300 children each year. Often, the number of children waiting for a CASA is over 50.

We have openings for those who are interested in being front and center, as well as those who would prefer to work behind the scenes! 

Do you want to help out, but really only have time around the holidays, or when IU students are gone on breaks? We need you! We are looking for volunteers to do regular, weekly shifts as well as filling in during the summer and holidays.

WildCare is looking for a volunteer grant writer to assist in sourcing and applying for grants locally, as well as at the state and federal levels. This opportunity can be a hybrid schedule, with some on-site time required to understand the work and mission of the organization. 

Wildlife rehabilitation volunteers assist in hands-on wildlife rehabilitation for ~1,500 animals annually. Tasks widely range depending on your interests! Every day is different and while volunteering you'll work under the direction of a licensed rehabilitator to provide care for a multitude of species. One day you might be assisting in giving fluids to a Great Horned Owl, another you might be learning how to tube feed orphaned rabbits.

If tube feeding opposum joeys is less your style, some volunteers choose to prioritize keeping up with laundry and dishes. Volunteering is individualized to your preferences and wants. If you're timid around foxes but eager to save Eastern box turtles we are more than happy to work with your interests!

Our goal for every animal that comes through our doors is releasing these animals back into their native habitat. Once that time comes you will have the opportunity to open the carrier and watch the opossums, skunks, snakes, birds, etc. that you've cared for go back into the wild. If this sounds like something you would like to do, every pair of hands that we have is another animal we're able to save. We look forward to having you on our team!

Volunteers will hang posters in the windows of local businesses and place bookmarks out in designated areas for the public to take home.

Each volunteer will choose a postering route and will be given a list of all the local businesses and organizations on that route (including addresses, business hours, etc.). The volunteer will be provided enough posters and bookmarks for all locations on their list, and will be given plenty of tape and thumbtacks to hang their materials. All businesses on our routes have accepted materials (a poster or stack of bookmarks) from us before. 

Training on interfacing with businesses to hang posters will be provided. All volunteers that sign up for this activity should be comfortable chatting with strangers.

Distribution Timeline & Logging Hours 

All posters must be hung between July 19-July 25, 2026. Within that time frame, volunteers are free to set their own hours according to their own schedules. We suggest attempting to hang posters Tuesday-Saturday, as many businesses have limited hours on Sundays & Mondays.

Do you love walking outside?  Does birdwatching sound like a good time?  Would you like to take a more active role as a citizen scientist?

Monroe County Parks and Recreation has two parks located within Bloomington, IN that are homes to many bluebird houses that are monitored by the North American Bluebird Society.  Throughout the nesting season, we need a volunteer to check on the status of each bluebird box and report the number and status of successful hatches.  What is great about this opportunity is that you get to pick times and dates that work best for you, and you get to see the lifecycle of native birds from nest to flight.  The season ends in September and has already started this year.  Monitoring is done once every two weeks.

Locations are Karst Farm Park and Will Detmer Park.  There is a small interview process to determine if the volunteers are able to commit to the program and its requirements.

Oh, the power of music.  Are you someone that loves to sing or play instruments?  Would you like to share your passion with others?  We are looking for volunteers that would be willing to visit our hospice patients to share their love of music.  Whether it's strumming old hymns or singing Frank Sinatra we have a place for you.  

The Hoosier Hills Food Bank relies heavily upon volunteer support to complete its mission. 

People are needed between 1-2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help with the staging of food products for pick up by agencies. The minimum age is 18. Volunteers must also be prepared and willing to lift up to 40 lbs. and maintain a positive attitude.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Summer Help Needed! Monday evenings and Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning shifts are open. Reach out if you can commit to one shift a week through mid-August (you are also welcome to continue indefinitely if you'd like to stay involved past August). 

The Brown County Humane Society is fortunate to have adoptable cats available at the Petco in Bloomington. This program is an important part of our highly successful 98% save rate by adopting out over 100 cats each year and it couldn't happen without our amazing volunteers.

Petco volunteers help care for the cats by providing fresh food/water/litter, cleaning the cats' living area, and giving plenty of play time and socialization to the cats.

Volunteers commit to a morning (between 8am and 11am) or evening (between 4:30 and 8pm) shift on the same day every week. Each shift takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much time is spent interacting with the cats. We are also currently looking for individuals who cannot commit to a weekly shift but could serve as fill-ins when needed.

Per Petco policy, volunteers must be at least 18 to work on their own or, if under 18, must have a parent accompany them to their shift.

Some dogs and cats need a little extra love and personal attention, and that’s where our incredible volunteers step in! Whether it’s offering a comforting presence to a shy animal by sitting quietly by their side or engaging an energetic pup in a fun-filled play session, every moment spent with them makes a difference. Our animal socialization volunteers provide one-on-one attention for those in need of a little extra time. This program ensures that these special pets get the companionship, confidence, and care they need, helping them feel safe, happy, and ready for their forever homes!

Socialization volunteers can choose to spend time with both dogs and cats, or they can choose to focus on one or the other. These volunteers will also sometimes help to prep enrichment items for the animals to enjoy at a later time. 

Volunteers sign up for days based on their availability (no weekly commitment required). A Google calendar is used for sign-ups. Volunteers perform their duties between 9am and 5pm and spend as long as they like interacting with selected pets. Age 16 or older.

Help us care for our shelter animals in Nashville, while they wait for their new homes.

At the Brown County Humane Society, we pride ourselves on how well we care for our animals, and our shelter. Every morning, our staff and volunteers care for our dogs and cats by cleaning their living space, supplying new blankets and toys, and giving them food, water and treats. We make sure that the environment our animals are in is as clean, comfortable, and safe as possible. Position also involves helping staff with daily tasks like dishes, laundry and general shelter cleaning. Along the way, there are plenty of cuddles, pets, and laughs. It's a great way to spend time with the animals and get to know other volunteers, and it's an essential part of our successful adoptions.

Volunteers will need their own transportation to the shelter in Nashville, which is about 25 minutes from the east side of Bloomington.

You must be able to bend, reach, kneel and lift. Training is provided.

Requires one shift per week on a regular schedule. Shifts are from 9am to 11am/Noon depending on animal population.  NEW OPTION: If you cannot commit to a set day of the week, we are now accepting volunteers to help on a sign-up basis. We ask that you commit to one day at least every other week, but it will not be a set schedule.

Walk for Their Life

The Brown County Humane Society is looking for volunteers to help us walk our wonderful dogs at the shelter in Nashville. Enjoy the outdoors with a canine companion on our 6-acre property, complete with barn, fenced in play area, and babbling brook. You might walk alone and help a shy dog gain confidence, or you could join a play group and teach the dogs to socialize properly. You'll also meet other volunteers and animal-lovers and get to know more about our wonderful shelter and programs.

Volunteers are required to commit to 3 hours minimum on the same day every week, for at least 3 months or more. Dog walking hours are between Noon and 5pm. NEW OPTION: If you cannot commit to a set day of the week, we are now accepting volunteers to walk on a sign-up basis. We ask that you commit to one day at least every other week for at least 3 months but will not require a set day of the week.

Volunteers will need to have transportation to get to the shelter, which is about 20 minutes from the east side of Bloomington.

Volunteers must feel comfortable and physically capable of handling most dogs (breeds and sizes). The average weight of dogs at our shelter is generally 70 pounds.

In need of volunteers willing to lead a craft session for residents. This person will need patience and a general understanding of the physical and mental limitations in an assisted living facility. All supplies would be provided by Cedar Creek unless the volunteer would prefer to bring their own craft! The session would be 30 minutes to 1 hour. Some examples we have done are molding clay, painted flower pots, pine cone crafts, and more. 

Assistance with filing nails and painting them! A volunteer may end up doing 2 - 4 mini manicures while chatting with the residents. All supplies would be provided by Cedar Creek, and there is no experience required! Simply be ready to chat and paint. 

WHY DONATE? Provide recycled and re-purposed materials for creativity. 

MISSION: The MFA is a reuse program open to nonprofit groups including: churches, schools, shelters, and also artists and volunteers working on community projects. There is such a large assortment of nonprofit groups, that we can't list them all! The MFA is designed to serve groups of Monroe County. Groups from outside of Monroe County, may trade items, but please call in advance for details.

WHO WILL BENEFIT? Community nonprofit groups including schools, churches, homeless shelters, scouts, Headstart, nursing homes, MC History Center, IU groups/program, Community programs/arts, and more. If a non-profit asks for items, we respond.

In need of artists or musicians willing to volunteer sharing their craft with our residents. This could be a paint class, a beginner piano recital, a cookie decorating course, or a perfect opportunity for you to practice performing with a crowd. 

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 2:30pm we play bingo. We are in need of a volunteer willing to simply call the numbers and interact with the seniors! This would be such an incredible help to both our staff and seniors.

In need of volunteers willing to assist pushing wheelchairs for our outdoor stroll activity. With only one activity director and limited staff to assist with activities, we are trying to find help that will allow our disabled seniors to get outside for walks! If the weather turns poor, we usually adjust to an indoor stroll or window bird watching.

Staff in our Early Learning Center (ELC) and admin building need dedicated volunteers to help with end-of-day cleaning and tidying tasks to keep our spaces looking beautiful and welcoming.  Tasks include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning glass partitions & windows, and emptying recycling & trash bins.

One-hour shifts are available Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 4:45 - 5:45 PM.  You may volunteer up to 2 days per week, if that fits with your schedule.  Once assigned a shift, volunteers will come in on the same day(s) each week.  Our volunteers typically commit to at least 3 months, but long-term volunteers are encouraged.

It has never been easier to help us save lives. In 2024, foster families took 56% of the animals that came through our shelter into their homes. Our foster team provided socialization, training, love and consistency to well over 1,800 animals in our community. Help us make that number even bigger!

Fostering is important because it helps reduce overcrowding in shelters and opens up space for another animal to be saved. It also helps prepare animals for adoption by giving them a chance to live in a home where they can fully express their personality, work to overcome fears, or recover from trauma.

We're looking for one person to spend their summer Saturday afternoons at the shop, working alongside one of our most experienced mechanics. No experience needed. What we're really after is someone who is reliable and ready to learn.

This is the kind of opportunity that's hard to find anywhere else. You'll go from "I think that's a derailleur?" to confidently diagnosing and fixing real bikes for real people in your community. You'll learn from someone who's been doing this for years, in a one-on-one apprentice-style setting that you simply can't get from a YouTube rabbit hole. And you'll become part of the local bike community along the way.

Volunteer Position Descriptions:

Crisis Housing (Weekend Animal Care) Shifts are normally 8:00-10 AM, 12-2 PM, and 6-8PM:

Volunteers play a vital role in providing comfort and care to our furry residents in our program. Whether you're an early riser or a night owl, we offer flexible shifts to accommodate your schedule. Choose from morning, midday, or afternoon shifts to suit your availability and lend a helping hand to our beloved animals. Shift will usually consist of feeding, walking, cleaning kennels and litter boxes, along with providing enrichment time. 

Mobile Clinic:

Volunteers assist with registration and ensuring a smooth process from start to finish. Whether it's completing registration paperwork or answering any questions you may have. You may also sign up as an animal liaison they accompany the pet to and from the vet, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the appointment. Our mobile clinic offers convenience and accessibility, ensuring that all pets receive the care they deserve.

Special Events:

Volunteers can help at fundraising events and tabling opportunities in our community. These events include Tails on the Town fundraising gala in April and Run for the Animals 5K/Barktoberfest the first Sunday in October.

Group Request:

Any requests for groups to volunteer at the Monroe County Humane Association must be submitted to mcha@monroehumane.org at least 3 weeks in advance. Volunteer groups cannot interact with animals without supervision, so group activities focus on helping in our Pet Food & Supply Pantry or an outside project, such as mulching, weeding, cleaning, etc., when this type of work is available. Groups can also support our organization by conducting a supply drive or hosting a fundraising event.

 
 Prospective volunteers are required to undergo our screening process. They must have a clean record with the Monroe County Humane Association, free from any negative incidents or previous violent, severe, or animal-related offenses. We maintain the rightto decline individuals if we deem it necessary for the well-being of the Monroe County Humane Association and its inhabitants.

The Refugee Support Network is in need of additional board members. We are especially wanting members who have some qualifications for the following:

Monroe County CASA needs Child Visit Monitors, a position created in 2018 to help observe the situation of children on CASA’s waitlist. A Child Visit Monitor will help to monitor the children through monthly visits until a CASA advocate is available. The Child Visit Monitor will visit a child or sibling group each month in the current placement location and then report back to CASA staff. Child Visit Monitors also help transition a case to a CASA advocate, allowing a smoother transition for the child(ren) involved.

Community members interested in becoming a Child Visit Monitor must be 21 years of age or older, have access to the internet for visit reporting, and be willing to travel outside Monroe County for visits if needed. This volunteer position requires approximately three hours per month of volunteer time and at least one year of service. A CVM does not go to court or participate in other case-related meetings. This is a great volunteer opportunity for someone interested in the CASA program but cannot commit the time to be an advocate.

CASA's waitlist of children in need of an advocate is growing. The Child Visit Monitor position is vital in helping us monitor these cases while waiting for an available advocate.

A store without a cash register, Teachers Warehouse (TW) provides free supplies to area students via their teachers. Additionally, we are a recycling center of items for classroom use. Public school educators in Monroe, Brown, Greene, Lawrence, Morgan, and Owen counties obtain not only basic school supplies but also materials that add creativity to teaching and learning.

We are seeking Board members who share a strong passion for education.

MFU is a Bloomington-based educational nonprofit inspired by Poland's underground Flying Universities, which defied authoritarian censorship by teaching forbidden knowledge. We carry that tradition forward: our mission is to teach the topics that are being banned, discouraged, or distortent in public schools and universities.

We focus on censored topics, silenced histories, and banned books. We also provide content around media literacy and democratic erosion. Then, we help learners turn that knowledge into meaningful action.

The board is composed of people with a broad range of backgrounds and skills, and no prior experience on a theater board is necessary. Skills such as financial, legal, operations, development, HR, management, and more are required to successfully run Constellation Stage & Screen as a $2.1m operation. Additionally we are always looking for Board members who can help expand the scope of our impact to new communities.

Constellation Stage & Screen Board applicants will generally start by serving for 3-6 months on a board committee to learn about the organization and judge if serving on the board is a good fit for them. After that period, both parties will assess if membership seems like a good fit and, if so, such membership entails a three-year commitment.

My Flying University needs your help to create online lessons that unpack current events and uncover the stories history tried to erase.

My Flying University (MFU) is a Bloomington-based nonprofit dedicated to helping learners make sense of the world through critical thinking, media literacy, and historical awareness. We believe that when knowledge is under attack, learning itself becomes an act of resistance.

We’re looking for educators, instructional designers, subject matter experts, and those with relevant lived experiences to help us build digital lessons in WordPress for three of our core projects:

Read Between the Headlines, where we analyze current events from multiple perspectives to reveal the deeper social, political, and psychological forces shaping our world

Explore Silenced Stories, which spotlights people and movements whose voices and victories were erased or distorted by history

The War on Education, which focuses on the latest attacks, gag orders, and other news about K-12 and higher education

Connect With Your Community, which focuses on the history and current issues of Bloomington, IN, and the state of Indiana as a whole

No prior e-learning experience is required. If you’re comfortable with technology (or willing to learn) we’ll show you how to build engaging lessons using the templates and tools we provide. We’ll help you grow your digital skills while working alongside others who care deeply about education and justice.

Help My Flying University launch digital clubs that bring people together to learn, create, and stay grounded during difficult times.

My Flying University (MFU) is a Bloomington-based nonprofit creating spaces for learning, connection, and resistance through education. As knowledge, history, and truth come under increasing attack, MFU is building community-centered alternatives where people can learn together, stay grounded, and support one another.

We’re currently seeking volunteers to host, co-host, or help support a new set of digital clubs focused on shared learning, creative expression, critical thinking, and community connection. These clubs are designed to help participants engage with banned ideas, develop their voices, practice responding to disinformation, explore history through play, and sustain one another while paying attention to the world.

Volunteers may help facilitate discussions or activities, co-host sessions, support logistics or moderation, or help create a welcoming and thoughtful environment for participants. Roles are flexible and can be shared, and MFU provides guidance, structure, and support for all club facilitators.

The Brown County Humane Society (BCHS) in Nashville, Indiana is seeking enthusiastic and compassionate people with business, leadership, project management or animal welfare experience to join our Board of Directors.
