The Shalom Center day shelter provides free meals to people experiencing poverty in Bloomington. This vital and life saving service is offered every day the Shalom Center is open, Monday through Friday. We serve around 60 meals for breakfast and around 120 meals for lunch

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We have openings for those that are interested in being front and center, as well as those who would prefer to work behind the scenes! 

Our 7:30am-9:30am volunteers help with setting up breakfast, prepping for lunch, and cleaning up breakfast service. This position is a nice mix of guest interaction and quieter prep time.

Our 9:30am-11:30am volunteers help with prepping for lunch. This position is ideal for the person who wants to help but would like to do so when it's a bit quieter, but there is still guest interaction! WE ARE IN GREAT NEED OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SHIFT

Our 11:45am-2pm volunteers are front and center! They help with serving meals directly to our guests, as well as cleaning up after lunch service. If you want the chance to interact with our guests, this shift is for you.

Filling in during school breaks is an excellent way to be connected to the community, and have a chance to check us out and see if we'd be the perfect fit.

Minimum age for these shifts is 14, or 10-13 with a parent/guardian present.

If you enjoy spending time with young children and believe that every child deserves high-quality care in a safe and compassionate environment, we invite you to volunteer in our Early Learning Center classrooms!  At New Hope for families, we provide full-day care (Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM) for infants up through age 5.  We welcome children of all income levels and prioritize enrollment for children impacted by homelessness in a mixed-income cohort.

As an Early Learning Center (ELC) Classroom Volunteer, you can look forward to engaging with children in conversation and play, assisting with art and science projects, keeping the children engaged during times of transition (such as lunch/snack time), and simply being a compassionate and caring friend.  This volunteer role is for those age 18 and up, though teens age 16-17 may volunteer with a parent.  Volunteers should expect to commit to a shift of 2 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months.

NOTE:  We are especially seeking ELC Classroom Volunteers who will be in Bloomington and available to volunteer from May - August 2026.

Elevate serves to connect experts in the community who are interested in short-term volunteer opportunities with nonprofits. Bloomington Peace Choir is a community of people who love to sing. There are NO AUDITIONS. Everyone of any skill level is welcome.  We meet every Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 pm during the academic year to rehearse Peace Choir songs. We meet at Bell Trace Senior Living Center 800 North Bell Trace Circle (just off East 10th a few blocks past the bypass) on the lower level of the Main Senior Living Center in the Commons Room. There is a fee for membership, but the first two weeks are free to see if you like it. We offer partial or working scholarships--just ask our Membership Coordinator about this opportunity.

COMMISSION PURPOSE:
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission seeks to promote and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and promote the acceptance of diversity in the community. The Commission partners with community events and programs to commemorate the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, volunteer service day initiatives "A Day ON! Not a Day Off", "40 Days of Peace", the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award, and the annual community-wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. The Commission supports events throughout the year which promote justice, racial harmony and equal opportunity.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
While there are no requirements for eligibility, preference for appointments shall be given to persons belonging to local religious organizations, the Bloomington human rights commission, Monroe County Government, local community school corporations, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Can be either a City of Bloomington or Monroe County resident.

DUTIES:
The duties of this commission shall be as follows:
(A) To promote and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and the acceptance of diversity in our community. In the pursuit of these purposes the commission may appoint additional volunteers and commission associates.

TIME COMMITMENT:
Regular (required): 2 hours per month

Episodic (not required but preferred): Up to 10 hours during January of each year for the annual commemoration of MLK Day. Other episodic commitments are dependent on the volunteer's capacity and interest and are not required.

We all know how a good haircut makes us feel - clean, confident, and professional! Barbers/Stylists are needed to put their learned skills of hair cutting and styling to use at Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's Center For Men.

For this shift, we will create a sign-up sheet prior to your scheduled arrival, and you will come with all the supplies to cut hair for the men residing at our Westplex Avenue campus in the near west side of Bloomington.

Depending on the duration of your stay and your speed you could cut between 5-20 heads during your shift. We are open to most days and times and are happy to work around your availability. Let's talk about your schedule!

We are looking for teens interested in producing a monthly event for teens by teens. From a concert to a gallery showing, maybe you'd be more interested in creating a play or improv showcase?  We need you to help us represent you.  What do you want to hear? How do you want to express yourself? We need teen volunteers to help spark the scene.   What more fun can you have while reaching those service hours or that resume bump? Join the team and we will show you. 

If you're a behind the scene, in the scene, or out of the scene we have opportunities and roles to fill.  Marketing and promotion, graphic design, producer, director, stage tech, maybe you are THE ARTIST.  Be apart of the team and let's do cool things that bring people together through music and art. We will meet weekly Saturdays at 3:00pm - 4:30pm at Lotus HQ.  Our call out meeting is Jan 24th, 2026! 

We need a person with excellent photography skills and their own digital camera to take photos at our event. Someone skilled at capturing smiling faces and people interacting would be ideal. We'd like both candid and posed photos to be taken. We will use the photos in our social media, newsletter, website, and to promote the subsequent year's event.  The Lotus Blossoms World Bazaar is a FREE multicultural arts and education event for kids, families, and community members. Volunteers present arts, music, language, and international crafts that let attendees get their hands on the world with more than 30 vibrant, high-energy stations. The Friday edition of the Bazaar is open only to area 4th-graders, but Saturday’s Community Day is free and open to the public. We're looking for 2 - 4 community volunteers to make it a success.  This upcoming Bazaar will take place April 3rd and 4th, 2026.

The Goat Conspiracy began as a small local sustainably-oriented farm and creamery. After almost a decade of working the farm, we began to understand gaps that could not be closed with respect to sustainability and animal welfare. In the winter of 2024, we began our "transfarmation" into a sanctuary/retirement home for our goats and chickens.

We would love for you to visit the Goat Conspiracy and learn more about our story, how we saw ourselves as an alternative to factory farms, but ended up realizing the impact of dairy among other forms of animal agriculture are neither sustainable nor truly in line with animal welfare. We offer farm visits/tours, yoga classes, birthday parties and hold a variety of events on the farm (follow us on Facebook or Instagram or sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of our home page).

Cashiers:

- Assist customers in purchasing their items at the register
- Are a friendly face as shoppers enter the store, and answer questions about the merchandise, and pricing.
- Should have a willingness to learn our POS (point-of-sale) system at the register
- Can occasionally help by answering the phone and/or helping to schedule donation pick-ups
- When overstaffed or during a lull in business, help to organize and/or clean the showroom

 Donations Intake Assistants:
- This position is a more physical volunteer role. You will be assisting the warehouse staff with incoming donations and outgoing purchases.
- This position includes processing donations to move them out on the sales floor, and back when purchases are made, as well as loading and unloading from vehicles in the drop-off drive.
- Punctual, reliable, and consistent volunteers may also assist on our truck with donation pickups from local residents and businesses.

Showroom Assistants:
- Will mainly be on the showroom floor, assisting customers as they shop by answering questions about the merchandise, pricing, and the Habitat program.
- Help process housewares and other items by placing and organizing them on the floor.
- Assist in keeping merchandise and the sales floor clean and attractive to customers through sweeping, mopping, cleaning, wiping windows, etc.
- A keen eye for organization is a great addition to this position!

Step Team Instructors

Opportunity House Thrift Store is supported by donations of goods from the Bloomington community. Money raised from sales goes to support the programs of Btown Pathways, including their income based childcare and self sufficiency program.

It's gets busy in our intake area! We are seeking volunteers to assist our part time staff with receiving donations and organizing them. Good communication and customer service skills are a plus; some heavy lifting required. Shifts are flexible approximately 3 hrs once a week (or more if desired) between 10-3 Monday- Saturday.

The Area 10 Agency on Aging Mobile Food Pantry uses decorated barrels to collect food donations — and after more than a decade of service, they’re in need of a refresh. Some are painted, others are covered in collage art, and many are showing signs of wear.

Here’s what we need help with:

BSWERS is seeking volunteers to offer overnight hospitality at our emergency winter shelter. We are working to build our volunteer base for the 2025-2026 winter season! B-WERS provides shelter to up to 30 community members on extremely cold or snowy nights at our rotating host sites: First Christian, First United Methodist, and First Presbyterian Churches. We are staffed primarily by volunteers who choose from the following shifts. No long term commitment necessary; volunteers are encouraged to fill in as their schedule allows!

1. Set-up shift (7:15-8:15 PM): This is the only shift where volunteers under age 18 may serve; families are welcome! Volunteers set up the registration desk, dormitory, and beverage station, and ensure cleanliness.

2. Check-in shift (8:15-11:45 PM): Volunteers check in guests, administer security screenings, and demonstrate hospitality as our guests settle in for the night. Great for volunteers who want to engage with and get to know our guests!

3. Overnight 1 shift (11:30 PM-2:45 AM): Volunteers supervise our space. Most guests will be sleeping, so volunteers are welcome to read, study, etc. if environment allows.

4. Overnight 2 shift (2:30-5:45 AM): Volunteers supervise our space and prepare beverages as guests wake up. Most guests will be sleeping, so volunteers are welcome to read, study, etc. if environment allows.

5. Wake-up/Clean-up shift (5:30-8:00 am): Volunteers help wake up guests and ensure they have belongings, coffee, etc. as they transition out of the shelter by 7 AM. Then, clean-up will ensue.

BSWERS volunteers have the opportunity to provide essential, life-saving service while forming community and engaging in meaningful interactions with guests and volunteers alike. Are you interested in making fair housing a reality in Central Indiana? The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) needs a diverse group of dependable, conscientious people 18 years and older to assist in gathering information about housing practices. These persons are commonly referred to as “fair housing testers” or “mystery shoppers.” Testers are provided training and a stipend for their time and related expenses. Stipends vary depending on the task assigned.

BloomingOUT, WFHB’s weekly live public affairs program devoted to covering LGBTQ+ issues in Bloomington and beyond, is seeking a volunteer news reporter to research, write and produce stories relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. MCHA is deeply committed to keeping pets with their families and reducing the number of animals surrendered. What is Head Start?

Head Start is a free, early education program for low-income households with the goal of supporting children in reaching their full potential. To achieve this, Head Start programs deliver services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way. The Policy Council is a key piece of our operations, and we would value more community insight and input!

What is Policy Council?

Policy Council is a group of Head Start parents and community members who help lead and make decisions about our program. Members receive, review, and approve/disapprove information regarding:

Policy Council members are ambassadors for Head Start. Your role is not only to attend meetings but also to advocate and tell the story of how our program makes a difference in the lives of children, families, and our community.

Policy Council meets once a month on the 3rd Monday of every month from 6-8pm. Dinner and childcare are provided.

Prison Affairs Reporter:

WFHB’s Kite Line program is seeking volunteers to write weekly headlines for the show. Kite Line covers issues related to incarceration, often by amplifying the voices of people directly impacted by the prison system. The program is known for its interviews with people inside prisons and for highlighting poor conditions, resistance and the broader effects of mass incarceration.

Headline reporters will write brief introductions to each week’s program, help summarize content, and craft headlines that reflect the urgency and complexity of prison justice issues. Topics may range from local developments in Bloomington or Indiana to national and international prison-related news. This position is ideal for someone with strong writing skills, an interest in abolitionist perspectives, and a critical view of the prison industrial complex.

Responsibilities:

Write concise headlines and introductory summaries for weekly Kite Line episode.

Collaborate with the Kite Line team to identify the core focus of each show

Stay informed on prison-related news and movements, both locally and globally

Audio Engineer:
WFHB Community Radio’s news department is searching for a reliable, detail-oriented audio engineer to join our growing team. The audio engineer’s responsibilities include creating and editing recordings, setting up equipment in the studio and at events, and meeting project deadlines. You should have excellent time management and show up on schedule for pre-recorded or live interviews for the news and public affairs department.

To be successful as an audio engineer, you should have a discerning ear and be able to identify what sounds good. Training will be provided and experience of all kinds are welcome.

Responsibilities:
Editing, mixing, and manipulating recorded and live sound.
Setting up equipment safely and on time.
Testing and troubleshooting equipment regularly, and replacing any faulty components.
Fixing and enhancing sound during live broadcast.
Participating in training opportunities and constantly finding new ways to improve skills.

Practical experience with sound equipment.
Superb ear for sound.
Ability to work under pressure and stay calm when things go wrong.

In times of disaster, everyone has something they can contribute to the community. Be it tangible goods, services, manpower, or time, everyone can help. The Community Organization Active in Disaster for Monroe County (MoCOAD)  is an organization composed of representatives from public, private, and non-profit agencies. A COAD's mission is to enhance the community's ability to mitigate, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.

Volunteers are needed to join the MoCOAD, in two capacities.

First, the MoCOAD is looking to expand its community reach and is looking for additional local government and emergency managers, non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, and businesses to join the COAD, attend monthly meetings, and get involved in local disaster relief efforts for Monroe County.

Secondly, volunteers 18yrs. and older are needed to fill “on-call needs” during disaster response. These volunteers would assist with tasks like water/food distribution, and other community needs. Want to help a mom opossum create a cozy den to raise her babies as she recovers from being hit by a car? Or feed a watermelon to capybaras rescued from neglect and abuse? Help shave a guinea pig before they get surgery, or take a giant turtle for a walk? Animals at the Pipsqueakery were all rescued from one sad story or another. Volunteers are what gives these lives a happy middle and ending. No day is the same and we care for a wide range of animals and do a wide range of tasks - volunteering is customized to your wants and abilities.

Daily tasks can be summarized as feeding, cleaning, and medicating as necessary. No previous experience is needed! Scheduling is extremely flexible, we ask that shifts are on average about 4 hours long, and we have a strong preference for folks coming by 1x weekly, however so long as you have eight hours in a month you're considered an active volunteer. We share a calendar with you and you put your name and the times you'll be by on any given day. New volunteers start in the afternoons and evenings as that best fits other team members availability, but once you're more independent morning times are an option as well.

This is a vital service that helps them maintain their independence and well-being. You will also have the chance to build relationships and connections with the people you serve and learn from their wisdom and experience.

Hola Bloomington is a Spanish Radio Program featuring news, entertainment, and public opinion.
The program airs every Friday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on WFHB 98.1 and 91.3!

Responsibilities: Arrive at 5:30, set up the "live room," notify hosts/guests when they go on air and off air, record the program, be able to manage the "dashboard", and upload the program to the WFHB page.  Instructions will be provided.

Spanish Language skills are needed.

Pantry 279 offers grocery delivery to our homebound clients in Monroe, Owen, Greene & Lawrence Counties on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Currently we are sending out around 160 deliveries a week! We appreciate any and all drivers that would like to Volunteer. This is a very important program as it serves the elderly, ill, disabled and clients that do not have the ability to make it in to Pantry,

A vehicle is required for this.  A driver can take 5-10 deliveries, We can arrange the amount of deliveries and area based on the day you choose.  We do need a FIRM commitment, as these families desperately count on getting this food.

The Orchard hosts weekly Work and Learn Days, from April to November, and all are welcome to join! 

The Orchard's Work & Learn Days offer a weekly opportunity for community members of all experience-levels to help us cultivate the flagship Orchard site, while developing their own hands-on orcharding skills. The first of these each month begins with an Orchard Tour. We encourage volunteers to bring their own water, hat, sunscreen, close-toed shoes and clothes fit for the season. All are welcome, and no experience is needed – we’ll show you what to do when you arrive!

These events are free, and open to the public, with no registration or experience required (though we appreciate advance notice for groups of 5+ people). We simply ask that you dress appropriately to do outdoor work, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Snacks and drinks will be provided as well as any other tools you may need to help out!

We hope you can join us to get outside and enjoy nature, make new friends, and learn some sustainable, organic orcharding practices. All are welcome.

Volunteer Position Description: Student Advocate

Job Purpose

This is a volunteer position that provides mentoring, directed referrals, general advising and support to IU Bloomington students at the university according to the mission of the Student Advocates Office.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain written files and perform tasks within FERPA and HIPAA rules to protect the confidentiality of student information.  Participate in regular training sessions (generally 4 times per year) scheduled for advocates in the IU Student Advocates Office.  Maintain confidential electronic records of each student case.  Participate in occasional assessment activities such as surveys and tracking documents.

Windfall Dancers has a beautiful garden on top of a hill near the stadium. We need people to assist with garden maintenance including weeding and planting. This can be done on an individual schedule. We have a list of needs for each zone of the garden that we can share with interested in volunteers.

The Salvation Army's Food Pantry is open Tuesdays 12:30pm-3:30pm and Thursdays 12:30-6:30pm.

Volunteers are crucial to our pantry operation. During pantry hours, you'll work alongside our Director of Social Services, Mike to provide the best care for our guests.

Some responsibilities include providing appropriate paperwork for pantry guests, stocking shelves, minor clean up, being a guided shopper as pantry guests make their selections.

Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County is about to welcome a new cohort of Future Home Owners and we are looking for community members to volunteer as Future Homeowner Education Instructors and/or Budget Partners.

The education program is designed to best prepare first-time homeowners, and instructors will cover defined topics related to money management and financial literacy, home maintenance and neighborhood development, and communicating in the professional world.

In addition to instructors, Habitat is looking to recruit Budget Partners. Partners do not need to be financial experts; they will serve as a coach and supporters to their assigned family/families while they are in the homeownership program (with a focus on helping them maintain their budget and personal finances).

Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build affordable, sustainable homes in partnership with local families.

Never used a hammer? Never used a power tool? That is OK, because there is no prior experience necessary to volunteer with Habitat. Our dedicated Crew Leaders will teach you and work alongside you throughout your shift. If you have experience in construction or carpentry, we need you too! We would love to have your knowledge on site.

Volunteers are invited to build with us on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM (or 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, depending on the time of year). Each shift will vary based on the tasks planned for that day. This is an opportunity to get outside, work alongside a neighbor in your community, and gain some hands-on construction experience in the process!
