Since its transition in 2015, it has grown to become one of the largest food pantries in the region, serving as a beacon of hope for those facing food insecurity. Nine years later, Pantry 279 stands as a testament to the power of community and the impact even the youngest citizens can have. What began as a small initiative has flourished into a comprehensive support system, feeding upwards of 9,000 people a month. Our reach extends across 36 counties, primarily serving Monroe, Owen, Greene, and Lawrence and the demand continues to grow.
More Than Just Food: A Holistic Approach to Community Support While providing free groceries and toiletries weekly is a cornerstone of their operation, Pantry 279 goes far beyond the basics.
They offer:
Monthly Distribution of Clothing and Household Items: Providing essential items to help families establish and maintain stable households.
Homebound Delivery: Recognizing the challenges faced by those with mobility limitations, Pantry 279 extends its services through delivery to homebound clients, recently expanding its delivery area to include Owen, Greene, and Lawrence Counties.
Summer Children's Food Program: Ensuring children have access to nutritious meals during the summer months when school lunches are unavailable.
Thanksgiving Kindness Box Program: Providing families with everything they need for a festive and fulfilling Thanksgiving meal.
ELF Dispatch Children's Gifting Program: Bringing joy to children during the holiday season by providing gifts and spreading holiday cheer.
Pantry 279 is also dedicated to sustainability. They compost or donate food that is no longer usable to local farmers, minimizing waste and supporting local agriculture. They are also committed to recycling, ensuring they are doing their part to protect the environment.
A Hand of Friendship and a Safe Space Perhaps most importantly, Pantry 279 offers something that cannot be quantified: a non-judgmental, safe environment where individuals can find support and connection. In addition to the physical resources, the pantry provides a hand of friendship and a sense of community that many find beneficial for their mental well-being.
