Be A Host Family!

The IU Office of International Development invites you to take part in a unique opportunity to engage with Indonesian high school students and adult educators who will be visiting the United States in August 2017.

This remarkable group is coming to learn about community involvement, leadership, diversity, and civic responsibility. What a wonderful community Bloomington is in which to experience all of this and more! Participants range in age from 15-19 years old, speak English, and are eager for an American experience.

Program activities will take place between 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. M-F.

Basic host family responsibilities include weekday transportation to and from our office in the mornings and evenings, breakfast and dinner during the weekdays, 3 meals a day on the weekend, and inviting participants to the normal activities of your household. There is no specific type of family/home that is qualified to host.

Exact host dates are from August 12th - 26th, 2017.

Anyone with a desire to get to know and care for these guests is encouraged to contact Tessa McConnell at tesmccon@umail.iu.edu or Courtney Hermann at cmherman@indiana.edu.

Special arrangements can be made for households with schedule conflicts.

Volunteer: Join us for weekly Orchard Work & Learn Days!

Are you interested in helping your community? Come join us at the Bloomington Community Orchard.

The Orchard will be holding weekly workdays to enhance and maintain the Orchard:  April-May: Sat. 1:00-4:00 p.m., June-August: Wed. 5:00-8:00 p.m., September - November: Sat. 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Each workday contributes to the growth of the Orchard by focusing volunteers on various tasks such as mulching, pruning, and general cultivation of the nearly 100 diverse fruit trees and plants. Without the generosity of community volunteers the Orchard wouldn't be where it is today.

Workdays are open house style, so join us when you are able. There is no need to register (unless you're bringing a group)! Just come on by and we'll show you what to do. They are open to people of all ages, abilities, and experience. Food and drinks to share are always greatly appreciated if you are interested in providing food for the workday's hard workers. Please come on out and enjoy some delicious food, meet new friends, and contribute to the growth of your Orchard!

Please schedule large groups in advance.

Volunteer: Garden Volunteers

HHFB's Garden program provides locally grown, fresh fruits and vegetables for free distribution to those in need of emergency food assistance. The more volunteers, the more fresh food we can grow. No gardening experience is necessary. Join us anytime during regular garden volunteer hours: April through October Monday 9-11 a.m. Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday 9-11 a.m. Teen Nights are the first Tuesday of the month from 4-6 PM. To check for weather cancellations or special volunteer events, including teen gardening visit the HHFB Garden & Gleaning calendar. We also welcome school, church and other community groups.

Please schedule groups with Sara Swan at (812) 334-8374 or garden@hhfoodbank.org.

History: Our Garden Program was born out of a continuing effort to increase the amount and nutritional quality of food provided to area food pantries and soup kitchens. To meet a rapidly growing need for emergency food assistance we have had to consider new ways to obtain food. Growing our own allows us to bring in varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables rarely donated to the food bank.
